New reason not to buy a PS3 . . . . . until July 1st

Most people who might buy a PS3 someday are going to wait for the price drop, but if you can't wait that long, at least you'll get 5 blu-ray discs free with it.

Ars Technica

The Guardian
Babel
Invincible
Chicken Little
Corpse Bride
Blazing Saddles
Kiss of the Dragon
The Phantom of the Opera
The Devil's Rejects
The Italian Job
The Last Waltz
The Omen (2006)
Stealth
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Species
Hart's War
Stir of Echoes
Underworld: Evolution

Nothing must-have for me in that list, though I wouldn't might owning Blazing Saddles and The Corpse Bride if they were free.

Here is the rebate coupon. Looks like the movies are broken down in tiers, so you can pick one from each of the 5.. They break down like this:

Eligible Blu-ray Players

Sony BDP-S300
Sony PS3
Panasonic DMP-BD10K
Panasonic DMP-BD10KA
Philips BDP9000/37
Pioneer BDP-94HD
Samsung BD-P1000
Samsung BD-P1200

Movie Choices (you can only pick ONE movie per category)
Category 1
- The Guardian
- Pearl Harbor
- Invincible
- Chicken Little

Category 2

- Blazing Saddles

Category 3
- Stealth
- Resident Evil 2
- Underworld Evolution
- Stir of Echoes

Category 4
- The Italian Job
- Black Rain
- Babel
- Devil's Rejects

Category 5
- Kiss of the Dragon
- Omen 666
- The Transporter 2
- Species
- Hart's War
- The Last Waltz

You have to include the ORIGINAL UPC on the Blu-ray player package along with a receipt (can be photocopied) from the Blu-ray player purchase dated between 7/1/07 and 9/30/07 with the purchase price circled. Limit one redemption per household, group submissions are void. Only good for the US and it's territories.

I'd probably go: Chicken Little, Corpse Bride, Underworld, Devil's Rejects, Kiss of the Dragon.

I just bought my PS3 last week too, grr..

People use their Xbox as a DVD/HD-DVD player and media player even though it's a gaming console too. At least until it red-rings on them 🙂

There's not much reason to buy a PS3 at all right now if you don't care about blu-ray. The game library and online play are weaker, and it's $200 more if you don't need wifi ($85) or HD-DVD ($180) for your xbox.

But if you do have a HDTV and want to feed it 1080p movie goodness along with your games then buying the PS3 makes more semse, and getting an extra 5 movies is icing on the cake.

why can't it do both??

I'm fine with it doing both but if I'm buying a console I'm buying it because of games not because it can play movies. Personally, I would have perfered Sony left the blue-ray player out of the system and just released an add-on like the 360. I don't have hi-def right now and I won't be buying any hi-def movies until either HD-DVD or Blue-Ray win.

That is why you bought a Wii, right? It is a gaming console, the 360 and PS3 are HD multimedia entertainment systems.

No, my 360 is just a game console. I might be saying "my PS3 is just a game console" if Sony had left the Blu-Ray out and knocked $200 off the price. 😉 But instead I have an Xbox 360.

It upscales DVDs, it allows you to download HD movies for viewing, it can stream the content from your PC, all without the add-on player, it IS a HD multimedia system, even if you don't use it that way.

Early adopters always get screwed out of good deals like this. 🙁

I'd use the PS3 to watch movies more often if Blu-Ray movies weren't so expensive.

Netflix / BB Online

There is a pretty killer deal at Fry's this weekend too.. Like 2 for $25.. If I remember right the movies were kinda meh, but it seems like they are getting the right idea.. I think I bought more of my DVD's through those blockbusters 3 for 20, etc deals than anywhere else.

As if we needed another one.

Instead of bashing the PS3, you should be more concerned about your friends at MS with their piss poor quality console.

That's actually very common at Fry's. They've had better selections in the past though.
