New Radeon 9800Pro Question???

I just upgraded from a Radeon 8500 to a Radeon 9800Pro.

Overall, my screen seems darker, and I have to change my brightness from 90% to 100% to get it back to where it was with the 8500. The contrast was and still is also at 100%.

I'm a bit nervous that I have to max my monitor setting out with this card. Does this sound normal? Could I have a defective card?

I am not sure if it is normal, but cards do differ in terms of visuals. What I might recommend is to adjust the colour, brighteness, etc in the ATI control panel if you are worried about maxing out the monitor. However, if you run your monitor at highest colour, contrast, etc. I doubt that it will decrease it's life span. I've had my Viewsonic G90F with Radeon 8500 for about 3+ years and I have contrast at 100%. What I do notice is that the monitor colours are not as vibrant as I would like them to be. I do not know if that has something to do with the monitor or my card. I did borrow my friend's Geforce 4 4200 and everything was brighter and lighter, however, the blacks did not look as clear as before making text harder to read due to the fact that whites were much brighter with his card.

So in essence, each card varies and I guess you should accept that adjustments are usually required to all components, be it a videocard, a monitor, BIOS settings, speaker location for optimal sound, etc.

I do not think you have much to worry about. I do not think you have a defective card, unless everything has a black tint to it. Try to adjust the settings in the control panel and let us know if that helps, since that gives you a lot more control over your monitor limitations

Well, I've tried tweaking all the settings, and it just does not seem right. Whites are not really white, and I guess I could say everything does have a bit of a dark (black?) tint to it, even with the brightness and contrast cranked up.

So how do I objectively (as opposed to subjectively) determine if this card is defective?
