Anything he wants will be pretty pricey IMO, at least, if he wants it to be decent. There are some single boxes out there, but I read terrible experiences w/ the interface.

Alternatively, you can get a junker of a machine and set up freenas. It will just unfortunately take up more space, and possibly consume more power (vs Time Capsule anyway). But it is potentially dirt cheap compared to NAS solution like a drobo

I'm about to make a writeup on how I got FreeNAS to work with Time Machine. Pretty much any old computer will work fine.

I think I found exactly what I'm looking for at a reasonable price.

This with two 500GB WD SATA drives would cost me $309 total, not to bad for a mirrored NAS.

I've had my eye on this one for a while. It seems to get pretty good reviews and is not very expensive.

That's the one I just found searching around all morning.

I think that's the one I'll be getting.

Looks good, let us know how well it works.

I just used an old PC with FreeNAS as I wanted a network time machine, as well as the capability to use uPnP with my PS3, but it looks like that may do the trick as well.

I'm building this for my friend first, should be ordering the parts next week and I'll post the results once I'm done.

If all goes well I'll be building one of these NAS setups for myself as well though I have a Windows and Mac mixed environment at my home.
