I just got a basset hound for my wife and yesterday when we got her home we didnt really have any issues. But today she seems to be whining a lot. She has been eating although not a whole bunch, and has been using the bathroom all day. It seems to happen a lot when she is sleeping. She will begin to cry really loud but seems to be asleep still. At times while awake she will start to cry and it almost sounds painful. Any ideas besides just being home sick?

You need to post pics first before we can be of any help and of your wife and the dog. ;)

Just give it time.

Wow that's terrible, but how's the dog doing? :)

Seriously, just a young pup is my guess. Check for any tender spots, see if it lasts more than a few more days or gets worse... see the vet accordingly.

Whatever you do don't cuddle it, or baby talk it when it is crying/scared. Dogs feed off confidence and as 'pack leader' you need to show it.

She doesnt seem to hurt anywhere. My wife would kind of push on areas and nothing. She gets to be very playful. I am thinking its just being homesick. Just sad to see her crying

I bought from a breeder and was looked at Monday but she was flown out to us. Yesterday she was kind of high strung. Since Ive been home today she had one really bad episode where she cried out for a good minute but since then it has mostly just been when she is/was sleeping.

Monday by the breeder's vet or by your vet?

It's the change of environment and separation from her pack. Give her a few days and she'll be fine. Play with her as much as possible and it's never too early to start some leash training. Try to walk her at least twice a day to burn off as much of that puppy energy as you can.

As far as crying in her sleep, that may never stop. My dog is over 13 years and does it. She runs in her sleep, cries in her sleep, and still suckles in her sleep to this day. Dogs dream.

When I brought my puppy home she cried quite a bit at first - huge change from being w/ her mom/litter mates. It'll take time- but if she seems to be in pain definitely take her to the vet, though you should do that anyways.

Mine does that too. It's adorable. I can't stop laughing when he runs in his sleep. Sometimes he quietly yelps like he's having a nightmare, but never loudly as described in the OP. He stops if I put my hand on him.

Same- though one time my dog let out a full on bark- scared the shit out of both of us.

Sounds like she's just having a hard time adjusting, but when you say using the bathroom all day, do you mean just goes a lot cause she's little or diarrhea? I work at a clinic and we have seen 3 parvo puppies this week. Has she been vaccinated?

it's just a bit of separation anxiety, it's completely normal. An old protip would be to use an old-fashioned clock that ticks loudly and a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel in the doggie bed, that will simulate the heartbeat and warmth of it's mother and should keep it calm at night until it gets used to its new home.

another solution would be to let the dog sleep with you in your bed, but beware, once you've done that you will never get the dog out of the bed again.

She hasnt had diarrhea at all which is good and she is up to date on her shots. I think the wife is gonna take her to our vet tomorrow. Last night was rough, she cried from 3-4.

I dont want her to be in our bed for a few reason, our bed is really high off the ground and that fall would be huge damage for her legs.

It's a valid concern. Just put the mattress on the floor if that's the only issue.

It is normal for a puppy to cry like that. Ours was visibly upset with a little whining but not too bad.

We have a puppy blanket that he is allowed to sleep on at the foot of the bed. We only allowed him on that blanket since he was 7 weeks and he now knows that the foot of the bed is 'his' place.

Many trainers say it's not a good practice to let your dog sleep in your bed... We've had no issues. He behaves very well and knows his place in the pack.

She doesnt seem upset when she is awake. Even this morning she was super playful and began to cry only when it was time for me to leave but my wife had just gotten up so she switche her attention to her.

It will probably take her a while to get used to the new place. My friend's dog used to cry a lot when they first got her. I think it lasted like a month.

Ours was the same. Waking up at 3am crying, didn't like being left alone.

I actually took 2 weeks off to stay home with him and it helped a lot. During that time I would put him in his crate and leave for 30-45 minutes so he could adjust without just being left all day. I gradually increased by an hour or two.

Ultimately he never really adjusted to being in the crate, but is fine with a pen. I use a webcam to watch him, and when we leave he just sleeps (he's about 4 months now)

I bought this and it's fantastic. It's easy to separate a few panels out to block doorways and etc.

WHAT!? Dog breeds have traits bred into them?? I just watched the cartoon the Fox and the Hound and thought the dog was sooo cute and just wanted a puppy like that! :p

Its now a howl or even a bark its a whining/crying. I know that being a hound dog she will be loud and I am fine with that.

My wife is home during the day all but a few hours and when we are both gone we arent leaving her in just her kennel. We bought one of those gates for the door and let her roam around our laundry room. Another plus is that the floor is tile so any accidents are easy to clean up.

it's a puppy you just took away from it's parents and siblings. it's probably just homesick and going to take some time to adjust.

Some of these stories make me feel lucky. My pup was extremely nervous and cried in the car on the way home and threw up when he got there. He was fine the rest of the day, but at night I put him in the crate and he whined and cried for about 2-3 hours. I stayed in bed wondering wtf I should do, but was trying to teach him whining wasn't going to get him out of the crate.

At about 1am I heard a really loud wet noise and got up to check. He'd vomited all over his crate (it might have been diarrhea, it's been so long ago I can't remember) and I felt so bad! I cleaned up and let him outside and after that he never had any problems being in the crate.
