The difference between 2 and 1.9 is 1/10 or .1
The difference between 2 and 1.99 is 1/100 or .01
The difference between 2 and 1.999 is 1/1000 or .001

Therefore

The difference between 2 and 1.99999 Repeating is 1/infinity or 0

Therefore 2 = 1.99999 Repeating

Hey Venk,

Nothing personal about the thread parody. There are just too many variations based of your simple thesis to not be annoying :).

FYI-

It can always be argued that 0.99999 <> 1, but should never be argued that 0.99999 = 1.00000 and so forth. As long as you're willing to supply 9s you never get 1 if you likewise supply significant figures to the number your validating against.

Example- is a car in mint condition if someone has dabbed a bit of paint on its underside that nobody can see? It's only no longer mint if you do a detailed inspection.

As you approach a car with paint smeared over the hood of the car, you know it's no longer mint with a shorter examination of the car.

In both cases the cars are no longer no longer mint, but anyone could see them as mint if they let more details slide from their definition of 'mint condition'.

So it can always be argued that 0.99999 = 1, 0.9 = 1, 0.51 = 1... (till the cows come home), but should never be argued that 0.99999 = 1.00000.
