New processor. Won't start

I've just replaced my old Duron 600 MHz with a Duron 1,3 GHz, but...

Now my computer won't start. I push the power button. LEDs turn on, harddisc, CD-ROM and floppy-drive reacts and all fan starts. End. Nothing more. My monitor doesn't even get a signal.

I'm running on a Gigabyte GA-7ZM, GeForce2 MX, and and old 20 GB HD. I haven't touched anything when I installed it, except the old processor and cooler.

I don't know if it's my PSU. Only 230W. Is that enough? I've done a BIOS-reset. Nothing.

Does anybody know what it is?

It is either your processor or your powersupply.
Find a powersupply lying around (if you have) and test it. Make sure it has higher W. If a 300+W PS doesn't work, RMA your CPU.

You _might_ try disconnecting all peripherals and pulling all cards except the video card and see what happens.

If it boots, then you know that your Power Supply is weak. If it doesn't boot, your supply could be weak.

AMD has a webpage that has approved PS for their processors. Sorry, I don't have the link handy.

The most important part is not the total wattage rating of the PS but the total wattage of the 3.3Volt and
5volt outputs. I've seen 400Watt supplies that have less 3.3v+5v wattage than 300 Watt supplies.

230 w psu is a good bet for being the problem
try it with nothing but the lowest powered gfx card you have and one stick of ram and cpu fan
even this might be too much for the 230 w psu
try and get a hold of a 300-350w brand name psu to test it
i'd suggest upgrading the psu no matter what as it will likely be a source of headaches and
instability as long as you own the box
an antec or enermax or other quality brand psu at 300-350 watts will only run you $30-40
if i remember right and will improve stability a lot, psu is not a good place to cut corners on a system
another possibility is that your bios is too old to recognize the 1.3 duron (600 was spitfire core, 1.3 is morgan core)
so if you eliminate the psu as a problem source (i strongly suggest upgrading it) you could try putting the 600 back in
and flashing to the latest bios

OK, I'll try to find a new PSU somewhere or buy one. And I'll try to put in the old CPU and update the BIOS.

Generally these two things seem to be the main problems. Everywhere else I've asked they also recommend a new PSU and a BIOS update.

Just wanted to close off this topic...

Here's a little story:

After finding out that it probably was a BIOS-problem I decided to update the BIOS... So I got the new version and tried to install it as the instructions said... Of course the program didn't work so I tried a Windows-based program developed by Gigabyte... And guess what? It WORKED! The first 16% at least..... The computer crashed and left me with a corrupt BIOS. !"%!"#%"#

So... What to do? New mobo for a Duron 1,3 GHz? Don't think so... So I found a guy who could hotflash it for me. With the new version. And THEN it worked. So I decided to buy some more RAM now that SD is so cheap... So, of course I got a defective module! Woohoo am I lucky or what?..... Returned it and got a one that worked. Except that it is double-sided and doesn't work with my old modules. But that doesn't really matter... Only had 192 MB... But that was my own fault not checking compability.

Computers suck. But we can't live without them!
