New Processor Question

I just got a new processor and I currently have a processor in my system that is using a heat sinc and fan (fop38) and it has Artic Silver as the thermal paste as directed. When I install the new processor should I remove the old Artic Silver and apply a new coat? If so what is a good method for removal? Any imput would be nice.

I've installed a new processor, and not cleaned the Thermal Paste off of the HeatSink very well. Naturally I was rewarded with higher temps.

If the grease hasn't hardened you can whipe it off with a paper towell. If it's not coming off too well then some rubbing alcohol can do the trick. Just make sure everything is good and dry before you put it back together.

A new coat of AS, Thermal Grease is always a good thing.

definatly clean and re-apply thermal grease of some sort. good call with the rubbing alcohol too.

Thank you for the imput, does anyone have any good sites on the exact proper way to apply thermal grease on an AMD XP processor. I have done it many times, but it would be nice to have a reference. Thanks.

BUMP!

Apply a VERY thin coat of AS (or equivalent) on the heatsink that corresponds to where the HS will actually come into contact with the CPU die. Take some of the excess AS from the HS application and apply it THINLY and evenly on the CPU die. The thinner the better. Mate the HS onto the CPU with as little sliding around as possible.

One more tip: never touch the bottom of the HS or the CPU die with your bare hands. The oils in your skin will cause you a world of problems.
