New processor dd3?

Hey,

My old computer has dd2 ram in it currently.

If I upgrade with a processor that has a ddr3 memory controller, can I upgrade to ddr3 ram? Will it work?

Thanks.

List your system spec's, but your answer is no you can't go from CPU that uses DDR3 into a computer that has DDR2. Nor can you install DDR3 in a DDR2 motherboard, basically you will have to upgrade everything. Also the newest hardware is DDR4.

Also the newest hardware is DDR4.

Yes and no. DDR4 is only currently available on expensive socket 2011 boards and is not yet commonplace.

OP, if you are looking for more performance, you will have to ditch your current CPU/mobo and just upgrade to, generally speaking, a Socket 1150 CPU and mobo with appropriate DDR3 RAM.

I believe the AM series of chipsets/motherboards were supposed to provide backwards compatibility with future processors. However, ddr2 and ddr3 memory sticks are not pin-compatible. Unless you purchased a mobo with both types of memory slots (I'm not sure if any were made), you will be out of luck.

But if you list your system's specs, people here will give you good advice on a sensible upgrade plan.

Thanks guys, his I'll get a new system.

Make a post in General Hardware... answer the questions in the sticky and post them. List what you have now (as best you can) and, particularly, your machine's purpose... and maybe we can figure out something for you. 😀
