I have a Canon MP500 that I've had for years. It seems the scanner part is not working any more and that is what I use the most, with occasional print and copy.

Yes, I know, no one uses printers any more.

Worst thing is having to buy ink but since I don't use it much, I don't have to replace it that often.

I definitely need scan and print capability, copy would be nice (most probably do all 3 anyway.
Wireless capability preferred.
Don't usually need to print in color.

Like to stay under $100, less cost is better!

Any recommendations? Inkjet or laser?

The cheapest way out is to get a stand alone scanner. The USB powered Canons are $50 to $80 on Amazon. Then you can still use the $3.99 ink (that would be the savings) from Swift ink.

I have stuck with Canon since 1994 because of print quality and the 3rd party ink is so relatively cheap. An example is that ink for your MP500 is $3.99 each at http://www.swiftink.com/Canon-PIXMA-MP500-Ink-Cartridges-s/1542.htm Shipping is $5 and 3 days max for me in Pittsburgh. Cartridges for newer printers are about $5.99 each there. There are also many other cheaper ink suppliers so take your pick.

I would look for wireless Canons under $100 that use 4 to 6 colors and have ink available at your 3rd party supplier.
Staples has the MX922 for $100 with 5 cartridges.
Office max has the MG6620 for $75 with 6 cartridges.
