For anyone shopping for a new processor or rig just be aware of new and upcoming price cuts. (I've seen a few Anandtech'ers in these threads chasing hot deals based on the old pricing.) As of today AMD's pricing is as follows:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ 2.8GHz 1MBx2 $188
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ 2.6GHz 1MBx2 $178
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz 512KBx2 $167
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2.5GHz 512KBx2 $136
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ 2.3GHz 512KBx2 $121
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ 2.1GHz 512KBx2 $104
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0GHz 512KBx2 $83
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ 1.9GHz 512KBx2 $73

On April 22nd Intel prices will drop as follows:

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800 2.93GHz x 2 4MB x 2 $1199
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 2.66GHz x 2 4MB x 2 $999
Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 2.93GHz 4MB $999
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz x 2 4MB x 2 $530
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 2.66GHz 4MB $316
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.40GHz 4MB $224
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz 2MB $183
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86GHz 2MB $163
Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 1.80GHz 2MB $113

Pricing and information can be found in this fine AT article.

Folks, keep in mind that the AMD prices listed above are TRAY (OEM) prices and NOT retail boxed prices. they are also 1,000 unit quantity prices, although places like the Egg and Mwave and such will usually be right around this price. (Or did AT actually list the boxed prices?)

When I saw that I could've gotten a 4MB E6600 for the same price I paid in January for an E6400 I was kinda sad.

Then I realized the 2.4GHz Quad will be $2xx in Q3. That'll be my upgrade. As long as I can get it to 3.4GHz I'll be happy.

After seeing the potentially sub $300 Q6600 in Q3 07, think I'm going to hold onto my Opty 165 for another 3-4 months and upgrade to a quad core setup.

And by Q3 probably more apps and games will utilize four cores. Bring it!

Why would you want quad core anyways. What programs out there can utilize quad cores? There are hardly any programs that even fully utilize dual-cores lol... Anyways, just my take on it. :p

Seems more like a cpu for a server than for everyday general use.

Seeing how a 6000+ and motherboard are $230 at fry's right now I'd say the above is higher than street.

Multi-media work (video editing/encoding, audio editing/encoding, photo editing)

As for the Quads, AMD's quads will be out Q3 as well, let the price wars continue!

WOW 73 retail for a dual core, I imagine it won't take long for it to be a sub 50 dollar chip. What a steal!

And won't AMD's be more than just two dual cores slapped together?
