New Power Macs

They sell from 1,700 to 5,000 dollars! I paid 2,500 for my single 867mhz G4 w/ superdrive. Today you get dual 867mhz for only $1,700. These machines are much faster I think.

Just a bit of information. Buying a top of the line Apple is a bad investment. You can get it more barebones for much cheaper. Apple charges huge market on most of the "extras". So the 5k computer is just for show.

Quad proc xeon

But you couldn't run OSX on it.

You couldn't even run Win2K on it unless you went with Advanced Server.

Viper GTS

you can, but it wouldnt utilize the 3rd and 4th processor.

Server utilizes up to 4, not advanced server, which can go up to 8.

Why bother? You could buy a comparibly equipped 2.4Ghz Pentium IV for about $1,800. The sad thing is that it would mop the floor with that $5,000 dualie 1.25Ghz G4 in almost every game and application in existance, except perhaps for Photoshop or some video editing applications.

I'm thinking of getting the 800MHz Ti Powerbook. I have a friend that works at Apple that can get me the powebook that normally retails for $3200 for only $2400! ;)

I would like to run OS X, and with 10.2 (jaguar) about to come out it might be worth it. I would still keep a PC for file sharing/serving, but one of the Ti laptops would be killer...

You guys think I should go for that Ti book?

Haha, well all I can say is make friends with someone at Apple. They have quarterly promos all the time on most of their systems. I just got a friend of mine $400 off of the 12" screen iBook 700MHz :)

The deal on the Ti 'book won't last long. What should I do!!?! :) $2400 is still a lot, but it's better than $3200 :)

Yes but not many people buy a mac to play the lastest games on. Most are either casual users or design people who use the mac to do real work on.

I noticed they FINALLY switched to a DDR architecture, and support PC2100 or PC2700. 'Bout freakin' time.

Wonder if they use something equivalent to Hypertransport or VIA's "V-Link", and wonder how one of these would compare benchmark-wise to various PC MB/CPU combos.

5k for a duallie? Oh good lord! Do they still ahve that stupid one button mouse? What I love is one of the comments "..most people that buy macs do real work on on them..."I never understood the big hype over OSX. What is the big deal? Just get a PC d/l the newest redhat and have at it. Am I missing something?

dunno if a "top of the line" mac should excite me, last time apple quoted performance figures on their "top of the line" dual G4 800Mhz with gef4MX i was more than surprised to see the fps in quake3 to be quite equal to the ones of my single p3- 800/gef1ddr. difference: their offer was like $3000 mine was $300 - Sound pretty competitive to me :)

The twin-engined 1.25GHz G4 runs professional applications like Adobe Photoshop up to 90 percent faster than a 2.53GHz Pentium 4-based PC

Is Photoshop the ONLY software they run on Macs? Becayse every frigging time Apple shows off the "performance" of a Mac, they use Photoshop! Sheesh, that's starting to get a bit old IMO!

EDIT: In other news... Apple chip breakthrough confounds physicists
