I was just consider selling off my current laptop and getting a PowerBook G4. Should I do that and then sell of the G4, and then buy a G5? I'm confused.

NO PC Laptop has a 15" and a 1" thickness throughout :D

You just can't compare the 15" PB to any PC laptop.

I'm looking forward to what a G5 12/13.3 or 14" widescreen PB is like :D I think 15" unless they cut down on the size by quite a bit is going to be too heavy.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Hahahahahah.

Oh man, you are a funny guy.

Have you actually seen a Powerbook in real life? Ever used one? There is no comparison to the look, feel and construction quality in the pc world, not to mention in regards to features, weight and price it is very comparable to a high-end pc laptop.

Then again, I might be biased as I'm typing this out now on my G4 PB :D

There may not be a G5 Powerbook ever, and there sure as hell won't be one in Q2, especially after this update.

Q1 = first quarter
Q2 = second quarter.

They are talking quarters of a year. If you need help beyond that....

There will be a G5 Powerbook, its just a matter of when. IBM has been working on cooler G5 chips for sometime. It probably wont be Q2, but 2H is likely a sure thing. Unless Apple has made alot of typos in their website code, and their OEMs are making stuff up, there will be a G5 based powerbook this year.

Though it is entirely plausible that Apple does a repeat of their G5's, as in announce it, then several months pass before they are actually avalible. IE: Its certainly plausible they could unveil the G5 in June(end of Q2), and it wont ship until end of Sept.

There is talk of Dual Core G4's hitting the Powerbook line very soon.

January 31, 2005

Apple's PowerBook has seen the longest lead-times since revision... with the last PowerBook update released in April 2004.

Although initially predicting PowerBook updates for MWSF 2005, ThinkSecret recently revised their prediction to this Tuesday at the latest.

Despite speculation and rumors of PowerBook G5 updates, more realistic expectations predict G4 PowerBooks up to 1.5/1.67 GHz.

Recent unconfirmed hints, however, have noted that previous rumors of Dual-Core G4 processors making their way into the PowerBook may be true... with some expecting that the new PowerBooks will make use of the new dual-core G4 chips as early as this week.

Are G5 that much greater than G4?

Parents have an iMac (G4 1GHz w/ 1GB DDR... those lamp-looking iMac). I've tried to use it but find the damn thing is slow as molasses.

If there is a G5 in the Powerbooks it is quite likely that it will be a chip, rebuilt from the ground up for a mobile environment.

There will be a G5 in the powerbooks. Apple and IBM have both said they are working on it. Apple has also said its committed to the Powerbook line and would not release a 1.5-2" monstrosity. Im sure whatever is needed IBM is working on it, and have been for awhile. Both companies know a G5 based Powerbook, similar to current powerbooks, would be a relative cash cow.

Compaq doesn't make a comparable laptop (one with a 15" screen and 1" thickness). You're bullshit company that you keep plugging on these forums doesn't either so STFU.

Agreed that the thickness isn't there - but the horsepower certainly is. And as for Compaq, they don't make the laptop. I don't either. Quanta builds both - the only difference being between the two is that I get them from a wholesaler, Compaq gets them direct. Exact same casing, damn near the exact same equipment, only thing different is the logo on the lid (and in the BIOS)

Yes - I've used a Powerbook in real life. Wasn't terribly impressed after the initial "Oh, wow, it looks kinda cool." Then I realized that it's just a mac, and a mac with a lightweight metal construction. My Compaq/house brand unit has a plastic casing, but is on a metal frame. Good luck dropping either of them, though. Your $500 Apple finish will be fubarred, and my case would be cracked.

Features?
My brand.
15" SXGA+ 1400 x 1050
512mb RAM
8x DVDRW
128MB ATI M11P Video (Mobility 9700)
80GB HDD (5400RPM)
Gig LAN, modem
802.11g onboard
Athlon64 2800+
XP Home
3 year no-questions-asked warranty
3-4 hour idling battery time
$1664 from the distributor, $1800 from me.

Compaq
15" Presario R3000Z
512mb RAM
8x DVDRW
64mb GeForce 4 Go
80gb HDD (4200RPM)
10/100 LAN, modem
802.11g onboard
Athlon64 3000+
XP Home
3 year accidental damage warranty
3-4 hour idling battery time
$1573

Apple
15" Powerbook
512mb RAM
8x DVDRW
128mb Mobility 9700
80gb HDD (5400RPM)
802.11g onboard (That's your Airport Extreme)
G4 1.67GHz
OSX
3 year warranty
3-4 hour battery idling time
$2750

Where are the differences in features? Oh, the G4 vs. the Athlon64. It's very, very, very well known what wins THAT contest, and OSX vs. WinXP. A matter of solid preference. More than $1000 in price - is OSX and looking stylish THAT important to you? These things aren't terribly heavy, either, unless you're a stringbean. Your manpurse that matches with your G4 probably makes up for the size and weight difference.

You guys are too easily excited by shiny things.

Don't mention that the Compaq is almost 10lbs

Since you, very obviously, are a cheap ass who will do anything to save a buck, while I, like many others, prefer quality over quantity, we can never agree.

BTW, do people really buy "your brand"? I mean, do you actually find people willing to buy "JoeBob's homebrew computer and boat anchor?"

what about software included? ILife is supposed to be amazing.

Stability, looks, form and function and feel all go to apple. the only reason to get a Windows laptop is ifyou run windows only programs, or game and there is very little reason to use a laptop to game. otherwise apple has everything nexessary for one of the best laptops out there.

compaq weight: 7.94 lb
apple weight 5.6-pound
compaq dimensions:11.18" (L) x 14.25" (W) x 1.82" (H)
apple: 9.5/13.7/1.1

again, apple wins

You keep plugging this bullsh!t company, making it sound like you actually sell anything... but then in other threads you are complaining about how you won't be able to afford tuition at a crappy little sattelite school.

So you needs to shut the fvck up.

From what I understand, iLife is additional cash. Not too terribly sure, and I'm also not positive on what exactly it includes. But I can tell you that Garage Band and iMovie and the other basic software are on-par with freely or cheaply available stuff on PC. iMovie = Windows Movie Maker. iDVD = Adobe Encore ($100?). GarageBand = Adobe Audition ($50) But still, even if you bought all the software to bring a PC up to par with the mac's software package, I can GUARANTEE it wouldn't total $1000.

And go sit on your "Stability" argument. The damn thing is on for 4 hours at a time, MAX. Both of them can hibernate.

Also, well, it seems to me that saving $1000 would be a worthy reason for sacraficing the little tiny bit of style the Apple gives you. The mac won't get you girls. If you're carrying a laptop, it doesn't matter WTF the laptop is. Girls may have more of an "ooooh, shiny!" reaction and come pet your laptop, but that DOESN'T mean that they'll pet you later. Besides, do you really want their fingers smuding up that titanium finish?

Apple laptops are overrated.

iLife comes free with new systems. It's aluminum, and the girls aren't allowed to touch. :)

You guys continually amuse me, keep up the good work. I sell stuff - I also have to do things like buy gasoline, pay car insurance, and operating expenses aren't exactly low, either. I'm BARELY profitable - and I'm intentionally grounding the enterprise in mid-March and going to warranty-service only just because I need more time in my life that isn't spent neffing and waiting for a computer to finish imaging. The LA branch that I was going to establish this June? We decided last night that my partners over there didn't have the time to do it, either. They FedEx'd their equipment stock to me today. I might keep selling the laptops, because quite frankly, I don't even have to take them out of the f'ing BOX.

There, that should be enough material to keep you going for awhile.

Good show, good show.

If you really want me to, I can go back and pull numerous threads where you talk about hwo successful your "company" is, and how much money you make.
