New power supply!

Just received my 7900GTX today, and found out my OCZ 450w PSU provides BARELY enough power to run.. which means no overclocking and what not (plugged in a 120mm fan and computer won't boot, post, etc.) So, looking for a new power supply.

Looking for a name brand, nice power supply for around 100 bucks.

System specs:

Abit KN8-SLI
OCZ 2gb PC3200 Platinum 2-3-2-5
WD Raptor 36gig
WD Raptor 74gig
SoundBlaster X-Fi XtremeMusic
EVGA 7900GTX
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Winchester
Dual CD-Roms

Seasonic S12 (430 or 500 watt), Antec HE Series are decent too. Check out Fortron and PC PowerCooling if you don't like Seasonic/Antec.

ps. this thread should be moved.

Dual rail PSUs provide enough power on the 12v rail? I remember back when SLI first came out dual rail PSUs seemed to give alot of people problems because they didn't supply enough amps on the 12v rail. The 12v rail was effectively cut in half, and two 12v rails at x amps didn't equal a combined total on 2x on the 12v rail.

Just wondering. Don't want to order something and it not work correctly, obviously.

None of the ones mentioned should have any problems with that rig. Another one to consider is the enermax liberty. There's a good thread in the general hardware forum about PSUs, Jonny's numbers are conservative but not excessivly so.

You bought a top-end videocard. Don't cheap-out on the PS. PC Power & Cooling 510 SLI would be my suggestion, but you'll have to pony-up another $100.00. Best build quality, best power regulation, best support, best warranty, most customizable options.

I'm not saying there aren't capable, less expensive alternatives but the fact remains that PC Power & Cooling PS' are the best in the industry. Most people on this forum don't use them due to their initially higher expense of buying them. But IMO the above-mentioned advantages more than compensate for the cost, since unless you run 6 or more drives (like me) and you go SLI later you will not have to buy another PS for many years. You get what you pay for...

EDIT: I should add that if you are going to use an inverted layout case, depending on which one it is, you may not have to use extensions on the leads from the PS. For instance, I run a Lian Li V1000, and all of the leads are more than long enough.

I would get either the Enermax 550W or Sparkle 550W models. Both are high quality single rail units that are fairly cheap (about $100) given how powerful they are.

I'm surprised that an OCZ 450W can't power OP's rig. He doesn't have any power-hungry components other than the 7900GTX itself (which draws a bit less power than a 7800GTX btw)

Same thoughts here. Your ps must be defective, because it should easily power your setup.

ditto...I have the OCZ Powerstream 420 and it's more than enough for the rig in sig. very similar except I've got 1 less HDD and 1 less optical, but probalby more fans, CPU OC is higher and the 7800GT is voltmodded so the power draw must be pretty similar I would think.

That was my first thought too, actually. The 520W version of that one is only slightly more powerful and it runs two 7800 GTs, which are much more power hungry, for me with no problems.
