I've always associated Porsche as a thoroughbred supercar brand. Ok, they've made some not-so-supercar lemons in the past, but on the whole the marque is tops second only to the exotic Italian beasts.

The 911 is the most developed multi-generational family of supercar ever. In fact the numbers 911 and 996 are synonomous with an example in thoroughbred development. They might have gone a little bit mad lately with the GT2, but Porsche goes crazy sometimes, like they did with the 959. In recent times they've also done well with the phonomenally successful Boxster, which is classic Posche to me. And we can only drool as we wait for the Carrera GT hits the showrooms - what an awesome Ferrari-eater.

Then they have to go and ruin it all and produce an SUV - named the "Cayenne" (pronounced ki-ann). Now don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against SUVs, but can you possibly imagine an SUV with the Porsche badge? I can't.

By producing an SUV, what they're effectively doing is joining the likes of the Executive marques, like Merc/BMW/Volvo. I see this as regression and devolution.

Can you possibly imagine a Jeep with a Ferrari badge? My point exactly. Same applies for Porsche.

And the Cayenne's marketing campaign is putting forth that the new SUV is an extension of the Porsche lineage. What bollocks. It's a 100% deviation from what I know Porsche to be and what I love Porsche to be.

Just compare this:

Porsche Carrera GT

and this:

Porsche Cayenne

YUCKS!!! And rumor has it a pickup version of the Cayenne is going to be released as well. And the only target market for the Cayenne is the US Market, and Porsche is leaving it's European roots behind.

*sigh*

Porsche is supposed to be all about Supercars, not SuperSUVs.

I don't think that Porsche's are all about Supercars... more like the ultimate driving experience. Just like BMW making the X5. I am actually excited to see the Cayenne. I bet that it will be a blast to drive. Hell, on of the kings of super cars made the king of suv's in the late 70's, Lamborghini Cheetah and LM series.
Also, I don't think this car is a true SUV. It's more along the lines of an X5. Just a taller, 4-wheel-drive road machine.

Base model will be at least US$60k in the States. That's without frills, and Porsche is known for offering a lot of frills.

Of course the cost in Europe will be reasonably more than $60,000.

I am sure it will be a nice SUV, not a POS, but no, I don't agree with it. This is way out of line with Porsche's tradition.

But like Flat said, this will probably be a cash cow for them. :(

I'd drive a twin turbo doch V8 with 400+ horsepower.

I'm not nuts about Porsche producing a SUV, but hey, they've already sold EVERY pre-order already. I just hope its up to standard Porsche fair.

I thought yuk before I even saw the pic of it..Now double yuk.

It's like a porsche/monster truck hybrid...or if you were to take a car and get a super lift kit for it, jack it up off the ground and put fat wheels on it..trashy if you ask me..wonder if you get a free pair of fuzzy dice to go with it?
