New Plasma vs. LED?

So I'm in the market for a new 3d TV. I was just looking at LED since in my mind, plasmas are thick, and extremely heavy. But then I see this deal over on slick deals:
http://www.circuitcity.com/applicati...gan_1280057584

And I'm thinking, wow, that thing is just as thin as an LED tv, and it's 50" for only $1348 shipped. I'm looking at another $1000 to get a 3d LED TV of the same size.

So what's the difference? Is it worth an extra $1000 for the LED? Or should I jump on this deal? This will be mounted on the wall and used exclusively with an HTPC w/ Ceton tuner & Nvidia video card for 3d PC games.

Plasma's are no longer thick and extremely heavy. LG and Samsung's are as thin as LCD's and weigh only slightly more due to the glass panels beings used. Panasonic's are slightly thicker. They still use way more energy though.

3D works better(at least for movies) on Plasmas.

3D on plasmas is an order of magnitude better then LCDs

the Panasonic VT series is the best currently, Samsung is close behind

Sammy makes really thin 3D Plasmas but you pay more for it for no real benefit

Energy isn't a concern, I don't pay for electricity and I hate the environment.

Not a bad deal, but you probably could have gotten a comparable 50" Panasonic plasma for ~$1000, and most people prefer Panasonic over Samsung anyways.

Yeah I couldn't touch 3d in a package this thin without spending another $1000 or so. It should be here Wednesday. Too bad I live in the middle of nowhere and the cable company doesn't carry any 3d programming. :(

Panasonic picked up a lot of Pioneer's patents AFAIK...and even made some of the parts for Pioneer until Pioneer left plasmas...so, yeah. Panny > Samsung imo.

That said, my G25 is buzzing...they have a reengineered power supply on order for me...

The Panasonic's have had quirks as of late. Samsung's buzz, and LG's need to be in dark rooms. They all have issues, the VT is the best, but both Samsung and LG have very competitive offerings, at cheaper prices. No Pioneer tech is in ANY current Panasonic, at the earliest it is the 2011 models, but its more likely it won't be fully implemented until 2012.

I don't intend in hearing the Samsung buzz over the sound of the GTX 580 in my HTPC.

Press releases list the Pioneer Kura tech as being sold in Panasonic displays as early as mid 2009 (some version of it, at least), according to CNET and a few other review sites. Sounds like they have some simplified Kura and Pioneer engineers working with Panasonic. Having done a little bit of research before buying my G25, I found similar postings online.

If they were currently implementing pioneer tech in their lineup, the top of the line VT's black level would be much lower and wouldn't have the various Panasonic only quirks either(rising/tripling blacks and floating blacks that have been around since 2007).

Thank you for perpetuating one of the most overblown issues on the internet. I personally know of six 50"+ Samsung plasma tvs that are 2009 and newer. Guess how many have a buzzing issues? ZERO. None. Are there some Samsung plasmas out there with a buzz. Yep, I'm certain there are. Will the one you buy have the buzz? Most likely not. If it does buzz, will you be able to hear it over the sound of the audio track? No.

Let this one go, already.

I got my first 58" C7000 plasma replaced because of a dead pixel. That one, and the one I have now both buzz quite audibly. The one I have now isn't as bad as the first, but it can be heard in low volume scenes, especially directly in front of the tv. It has got worse over time.

They all buzz to varying degrees. Samsung tech told me 58" and 63" will be louder because of dual power circuit boards or some shit.

You know its not your imagination when you're on ventrilo and turn on your tv, and someone asks "what's that buzzing noise?"

First off, all plasmas buzz. Period. Second, Samsung's plasmas buzz the loudest. Period. In terms of buzz its LG, Panasonic, then Samsung as distant third.

No one has a perfect panel. No one ever will. Even Kuro's had their issues. They will never get around the inherent flaws of LCDs, LED LCDs, or Plasmas.

I've been doing some reading and it seems that the GTX 580 is significantly quieter than the GTX 480 was. I may need to "downgrade" my htpc plans to include a GTX 480 for the background noise so I don't hear this plasma buzz everyone is talking about.

I agree. My 2009 50" Samsung plasma, although the buzz is very quiet and only audible from a couple feet away while muted, it's still there.

They are a crap shoot as to how loud it will be though. Look through AVS forums. I've seen people there exchange 5+ Samsung tv's of the same model without any luck, all because of buzz.

If you can't hear it, you've probably lost that hearing range. My gf can't hear my tv, but she's a lot older than I am. The buzz is plenty loud enough for me to say I will not be buying another Samsung plasma, at least until they quiet them down to what I would say is normal.

I'm hoping OLED will be mainstream by the time I need a new tv. That review of that LG set the other day was drool inducing.

bought my pn58c8000 in JULY, the samsung 7.1 surround sound w/ 3d blu ray player and 4 pairs of rechargable glasses. Needless to say, I spent a pretty penny. After 2 months of ownership, while cleaning the screen, I noticed a row of dead cells. Got my magnifying glass & noticed that in fact 2 cells were dead a red and a green. which made it look like 4 cells were dead due to the 2 blue pixels on the side of the 2 dead ones. I am not calling them pixels because someone @ samsung tech said plasmas dont technically have pixels but individual cells.

Anyway, I had it replaced which took 6 weeks due to the many trips from the tech. 1st he had to come identify the issue, 2nd he had to order the part to my house (which was the entire internal display component) 3rd he had to come install said part.

Upon finalization of the install he inspected the screen and guess what? The new part also had a Bright PINK cell on the opposite side of the screen. WTF? anyway he said that the Samsung customer relations department would now contact me soon about our next plan of action. 8 weeks past & now the tv, for some odd reason not related to the PIXEL, gets black for a second w/ audio playing when it recovers all my settings are reset!! it is so ridicilous! this happens every 15 min, i have to change the brightness, sharpness, color, advanced settings, etc.. it really sucks.

Finally contacted Samsung myself after being forgot about by customer relations 3 weeks ago. They approved me for a TV replacement with a new tv, which took 5 days for the approval. Now I have been waiting for the "exchange dept" to call me which is apparently doesn't directly correspond with eachother expect through email. It had been 3 days waiting for them. Then once I accept the product that they have available it will take another 7-14 business days to get my new tv.

Kind of really been a crappy situation with this tv. Samsung will offer me the same or better. I was thinking of getting a LED version but dont want to lose out on the FULL HD 3D effect or screen size (only 55in LED in price range). I love my tv when it was working fine, but now i"m afraid of this model DUE TO ALL THE COMPLAINTS OF DEAD CELLS and my personal experience w/ 2 faulty pannels. what to do, what to do???
