Do some best places to live searches to get some lists, and also lookup communities on Epodunk.com to get more info. That's the route I took, and wound up in new mexico (low cost of living, great climate, easy going, not too crowded.) Work wasn't a factor tho so that opened things up quite a bit.

I don't have any problems with AL but if the OP has problems with his race in a huge metropolitan area I don't think he will do too well in Alabama.

side note: I will be in Phenix City (border out by Columbia, GA) 15th-18th, my brother's finally home from Iraq! (for 18 days that is)

I like anywhere that gets cold, though I couldn't imagine leaving the Northeast. I like the seasons, the history, and how close everything is. Nothing like having Washington DC, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New York City, and Boston all within a half a day trip. On a cross country motorcycle trip the only state I wanted to get out of was Texas! Good luck with your decision.

Well, I currently work at a product engineer designing switchboards but I'm hoping for something else in engineering rather than power. I like semiconductor design and IT style jobs sounds fun as well.

Well, you can cross out Louisiana since most jobs will be oil field or chemical related. Semiconductor would be Northwest, Northen Cal, and the southwest. IT style jobs can be found anywhere.

I just moved to Dallas a year ago and I like it here, weather is alot better than in Louisiana and there is more to do. Course I would rather live in Portland, OR given the choice.

You forgot about the casios in Louisiana. So where are you now in DFW and left that cute gf in south La?

It is sad that most, if not all, young people are leaving the state of La. I won't stay around here too long.

OP, I visit DFW almost monthly and have many relatives/friends there. While it is not perfect but it is a decent place to live. It will help if you move to the suburban areas such as Plano or Frisco.

I still can't understand why anyone lives anywhere but in Northern California.

Dallas is crappy compared to Austin.

My dad works in Dallas, but has a home in Austin because he hates Dallas. He drives back and forth once a week.

Edit: Regarding the issue of racial discrimination, I don't think location has too much to do with it. I'm White/Asian, and a lot of people (including friends) use Asian stereotypes on me. 99.99% of the time, it is just lighthearted humor.

If you mean Houston is more cultural in that it is like living in mexico. Houston is a shit hole.

OP. If you feel like you are "racially profiled" because your friends call you the token black guy, you either need to find new friends or man up and tell them to knock the shit off. If they are your friends they will. If they don't find a new group of friends.
Seriously, anywhere you go you're going to run into things like this. The least likely though would be Kalifornia due to all the bleeding hearts out there.
I for one love Dallas.

Come back to Texas
Its just not the same since you went away
Before you lose your accent
And forget all about the Lone Star State
There's a seat for you at the rodeo
And I've got every slow dance saved
Besides the Mexican food sux north of here anyway

Troy Aikmen wants you back
Willie Nelson wants you back
NASA wants you back
And the Bush twins want you back
And Pantera wants you back
And Blue Bell wants you back

Roger that on Houston being a shithole. It's the New Jersey of Texas. Terrible, terrible place. Made worse by the massive influx of homeless\indigent people after Hurricane Katrina. There are homeless people on just about every street corner in Houston.

Because we don't like having sex with other men??? j/k
In Texas the only disasters i have to worry about are, tornadoes and I can see those coming. In California, you never know when an earthquake will get ya. Also, some people like to think for themselves and not let the .gov run everything. Also can't forget that some people don't like the state enacting laws that go around the Bill of Rights. Specifically the 2nd one.

yet another misconception about alabama. what makes you think there are racial problems in metro AL? you would be hard pressed to find people prejudice against someone due to their race in most of alabama. either you are confusing stereotyping (nothing wrong with that) with racism or you don't know anything about alabama.
