I get discriminated against more times than I can count and I am just plain sick of it because I am a mulatto man (half spaniard from Spain, half black), and most of my friends are white and all of them were born and raised it Texas and refer to me as the token black guy who eats fried chicken and drinks orange soda...I'm HALF black...can we stop living in the dark ages please? I don't listen to rap, I don't wear negatively portrayed cultural clothes, I don't talk with "ethnic slang". I just want somewhere where I can live out my life normally and die in peace because Texas... AIN'T it.

sounds like you have more problems with the people youre hanging out with, than the state.
Dude, if you cant live in Dallas as a half Black / Half Spaniard, then youre not noticing demographics or youre out in the 'burbs.

-The racial makeup of Dallas was 48.89% White, 40.41% Hispanic or Latino of any race, 25.88% Black or African American...

so, you're in the majority. remember that when moving somewhere else.
There's good things about Texas, there's bad things. Like anywhere else. I for one don't miss people's pompous attitude. Some posts in this thread is a great example of that.

Let me guess, you where born and raised in New Orleans and then moved to Texas? I ask because with that math it appears you graduated from our great N'awlins publik skewl edukation system.

Texas counts latino/hispanic as a cultural classification, independent of race.

So a little over 15% of the Hispanic/Latino population is classified as white, black, or other?

The racial makeup of Dallas was 48.89% White, 40.41% Hispanic or Latino of any race, 25.88% Black or African American, 2.91% Asian, 0.54% Native American, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 20.24% from other races, and 5.33% from two or more races. Non-Hispanics whites accounted for 34,56% of the city's population. Hispanics outnumbered African-Americans for the first time in the 2000 census as the largest minority group in Dallas.

Yup. I can technically claim Latino status, since I grew up in Ecuador. But I don't, because I have a feeling the admissions committees would feel cheated and reject me out of spite.:)

My brother in law is a Gonzales, but he's blond haired, blue eyed and lighter skinned than I am.

On the other end of the spectrum, guys like Sammy Sosa are also considered hispanic.

i tried to get in on the hispanic thang in college, but apparently it wasnt enough to make them feel sorry for me and give me buckets of cash. it worked for my mom and my bro tho.

It's sounds like the real problem is that your so called friends are a bunch of jackasses IMO.

I live on the north side of Atlanta and can say that it's a decent place to live.

I moved from South FL (Ft. Lauderdale, Miami area) and don't miss it one bit.

Well, I currently work at a product engineer designing switchboards but I'm hoping for something else in engineering rather than power. I like semiconductor design and IT style jobs sounds fun as well.

Well, you can cross out Louisiana since most jobs will be oil field or chemical related. Semiconductor would be Northwest, Northen Cal, and the southwest. IT style jobs can be found anywhere.

I just moved to Dallas a year ago and I like it here, weather is alot better than in Louisiana and there is more to do. Course I would rather live in Portland, OR given the choice.

Yep one of the most wonderful things we have been busy doing since the 1970's is separating ourselves into an ever increasing number of races and ethinic groups, all the better to judge and fight with one another over every perceived slight and insult ever perpetrated against our group by the "other".

How exactly did you come up with that?

I was pointing out that adding the 3 groups up gave a number higher than 100%. At the time I failed to realize that Hispanic/Latino is a cultural classification as I pointed out in a later post. How that equals that I don't realize there are other races than those is beyond me.

Sorry to hear that, OP. I love Dallas and I have experienced quite a bit of cultural diversity in the same field as you. I went to UTD and graduted in may with my BSEE, however I haven't started a full time job yet. I will be moving to Austin to start in January. Tons of Indians, some blacks, some hispanics in my classes though. I didn't see anyone pulling shit like your friends, maybe they just suck.

Where is Dallas btw? I am assuming N Dallas/Plano since you are EE.

Yeah around here we all ride horses to work every day, wear spurs and hate the "colored" folk.

Seriously, though it's a metroplex of 4 million people (Dallas is the 9th largest city in the US, Fort Worth is 18th, I count them together since they are a 30 minute drive apart). Just like Houston, which is the 4th largest city in the US, you have diversity everywhere. Anything you would possibily want you can find within an hour's drive.

edit: side note, before I checked wikipedia I would have bet you a lot of money that Boston has more people than El Paso. I would have lost a lot of money.
