It will stomp the RS4. It has too. The M3 is/was the benchmark for it's sector. BMW has too much ridding on the M3 for it to lose to the RS4, or even Lexus' upcoming car.

nooooooooooooo keep this away from me...

hypothetically, could someone making 100k with no debt afford this car (with lots of financial breathing room)?

ROFL! Lexus' new car! It will be a piece of shite just like the IS350 is. Okay, so its straight-line performance will be okay but I bet in terms of handling, braking, and sheer driving pleasure, I bet the E36 M3 had it beat 10 years ago!

Wasn't the old one 0-60 in 5 seconds flat, if so, 4.9 doesn't seem like such an improvment.

Read my previous post. C&D got 4.8s out of the E46 M. BMW claims that the 335i does it in 5.3s while C&D got it in the 4.8-4.9s range. Obviously BMW is underrating the times. I believe the E92 M3 should be somewhere in the 4.3-4.5 range.

0-60 times are irrelevant. The car will have a lot more torque and will be able to pull a lot harder. One thing that irritates me is that BMW keeps making the M3's porkier. I realize safety is a concern and even luxury at some point. I have a feeling this car will be in the 3400+ range again, which is a pig IMO.

That should not surprise anyone, Chris Bangle keeps taking handsome cars and turning them in to toads. Not even a kiss from a princess can save them.

What makes you say that? The e46 M3 kept up with the audi on the track, and the e92 generation should be able to match its straight line speed. Unless you have some info on the next gen RS4.

fifth gear test I

fifth gear test II

m3 != m3 cs != m3 csl

the test you linked is an m3 cs vs an rs4.

a normal m3 would have lagged significantly farther behind the rs4 around the track. the m3 cs was handling the corners better but still was consistently losing ground to the rs4.

bmw would have to put a whole lot into the new m3 to make it faster around the track than an rs4, especially considering the trend of the m3's getting heavier each revision.

They certainly are getting fatter and uglier aren't they? Maybe the E92 will look slimmer and meaner in black but I'm personally not digging this revision. At least they're giving the US an option to go stick, or was this for the M5? If so, I hope if carries over to the 3.

Mind you, it was a damp/wet track. Also I did not mention the CSL. The CS is simply an M3 with larger brakes, a quicker steering ratio, and larger wheels and tires. Granted it gives a lot more grip, but its basically useless on a damp track. The 60+ hp difference does not help either. I have not searched for any lap times of the RS4 around the Nurburgring, but i suspect it to be only a hair faster than the m3 if that. IMO that classifies the E46 M3 keeping up with the RS4, but i will drop it. The E92 M3 probably won't be much fatter than its 3400 lb predecessor. All 3 are/will be amazing cars in their own right.

Yes it was the M5 that has the option for a stick, although it seems to be a lot slower than the SMG.

don't forget that the wetness of the track also made the rs4 understeer more than it would in dry conditions.

you didn't mention the cs either.

larger brakes, quicker steering ratio, larger wheels and tires make significant differences in laptimes.

though i like the 3 series as well, i don't like the stigma that the majority of 3 owners give the 3. ie - rich and arrogant gnerally enjoying the bmw as a status icon more than a pleasurable driving machine.

the e30 m3 will always be the best m3 (to me)
