Another thing is that it appears this unit DOES not have digital optical out. It has digital coaxial out. I am quite suprised since i thought no one used digital coaxial out. Oh well i guess i have to buy another cable.

I have been told the coax is as good as the optical. I had always used the optical in the past, but it appears it is being dropped for the coax.

Does upscaling really look better? Ive got a 57" Hitachi HDTV, would it look better than a normal DVD player?

Like I said, you can put all the make up on Rosanne, she will never look like Charlize Theron.

Another gripe is with the player itself - what's with the minimalistic button layout? Without the remote, the only thing you can do is play and stop, cannot do any setup functionality, or move the cursor on menus. That is a horrible trend, I know it's a cheap player, but if I lose the remote, the functionality of this unit is severely crippled.

That's been a trend for the better part of the last 15 years for most AV components.
Unless you are sitting next to your AV rack/shelf, I can't see why you would want to continue using a unit with no remote. You can always buy a new remote or a DVD player. I don't believe many people would tolerate the inconvenience to save $30.
But you never know, I might be lazier than most.

Would like to hear the outcome of your setup, I have had this in mind once I read about this player as well.

Any recommendations on where I can buy a cheap HDMI cable? Looked at newegg, but shipping doubles the cost.
monoprice.com
will any of those work? whats the difference between them?
i'm thinking about getting this DVD player but have no idea which cable to buy.
I have bought 5 HDMI cables from Monoprice, all work perfectly. I currently have a 35ft HDMI to DVI cable running to my projector, and it works great.
Don't get ripped off paying for "high end" digital cables. It's not like analog, where signal degradation can be very subtle. With digital cables, if you are getting a consistent signal, then there is no quality difference with a different cable. Save your money.

You can't get anymore Elite than Rio Rebel but I also vouch for Monoprice.com's HDMi cables.
IIRC we bought product SKU 2412 which cost $5.25 or so, it works great on our 50" DLP.

PS
I doubt that connection to a Wifi box then out to your PC will work.
First it have to see a Fat32 drive and then pull directly from the drive.
I know some boxs let you map to you pc but i dont think the mapped drive will look right to the DVD player. Good luck if the does work.
What I do is let my Laptop in my room copy files daily on a task from my HTPC. The just pull it off and connect to my dvd play when i want to wtach something. This has been working for me.

got mine today and got it set up.
nice little player but i can't tell a difference between 480p and 1080i
my TV is a 30" Philips HD CRT that only does up to 1080i and it was pretty inexpensive so it may be the TV that is limiting me.
