Went to my local BB and asked them to match BB online, which they did at $62.99

The unit comes in a strange box, it has French on one side and Spanish on the other.
What ever happened to English in the US?

I have been told the coax is as good as the optical. I had always used the optical in the past, but it appears it is being dropped for the coax.

It is as good. Both of them transfer the signal digitally so as long as you have a good connection then they both will be the same. Actually the digital coax is a studier cable than the digital optical but everything, from what ive seen, has gone the way of digital optical.

It really depends on upscaler in your TV. I have a Hitachi 42" plasma and see almost no difference with my OPPO. I mean I would probably have to take screenshots to see the difference. Either that or I'm blind and my tv isn't calibrated properly. But other people rave to no end about OPPO, they claim it's like night and day so I assume the upscaler in my TV is just really good.

Oppo seems not to be a good upscale player. I also see no difference when TV upscales or player. Considering that I paid for Oppo $200, this deal is increddible. So run faster and buy the player.

I gave this a try. Upscaling does work to some degree, but sometimes it seems to make the MPEG artifacts even worse, and seems to introduce other artifacts with sources that are not very good (or in motion) - something I would describe as "dust pixels". From a distance the differences are almost indistinguishable, although up close, I can see the differences between the different upscale modes, so it's probably worth to use.

Another gripe is with the player itself - what's with the minimalistic button layout? Without the remote, the only thing you can do is play and stop, cannot do any setup functionality, or move the cursor on menus. That is a horrible trend, I know it's a cheap player, but if I lose the remote, the functionality of this unit is severely crippled.

That's been a trend for the better part of the last 15 years for most AV components.

Unless you are sitting next to your AV rack/shelf, I can't see why you would want to continue using a unit with no remote. You can always buy a new remote or a DVD player. I don't believe many people would tolerate the inconvenience to save $30.

But you never know, I might be lazier than most.

I sometimes want to use it without a remote, too, when I'm just putting in a DVD and want to go to a specific scene - it's retarded to use the remote when the player is within my reach. I do not like the "new" trends, it may have been happening for the last 15 years, but I still managed to buy mostly full-featured components in the last 5 years - this is the first "naked" model. Also, I don't believe in justification or making excuses for the manufacturers for doing this sort of thing - it plain sucks, and I will never like it. It's good that this model is at least fairly competent, or otherwise I would be returning it.

Yeah, that's the ticket - a fairly competent nude model, that's what it is.

You seem to get pretty agitated over little things. It makes you sound old enough to be my grandfather - and I'm almost 60! ;)

Once again, you can put all the make up on Rosanne, she will never look like Charlize Theron.

Gibster can suck it. Enjoy your Rosanne and her 480p image. I prefer my Charlize 1080p.

Totally. This is exactly what I am trying to do. I have a D-Link DSM-G600 that is an external HD enclosure with Wi-Fi capability. It can act as an access point and communicate with your wireless router.

So, ideally, I am hoping to hook up the DSM-G600 to the Philips DVD player via USB in the bedroom, and connect it to my network over Wi-Fi. The only potential problem with that is whether the DVD player is able to read DSM-G600's file system. There have been reports of it getting confused by U3 software, so I am not sure what to expect.

Would like to hear the outcome of your setup, I have had this in mind once I read about this player as well.

Any recommendations on where I can buy a cheap HDMI cable? Looked at newegg, but shipping doubles the cost.

monoprice.com

will any of those work? whats the difference between them?

i'm thinking about getting this DVD player but have no idea which cable to buy.

I have bought 5 HDMI cables from Monoprice, all work perfectly. I currently have a 35ft HDMI to DVI cable running to my projector, and it works great.

Don't get ripped off paying for "high end" digital cables. It's not like analog, where signal degradation can be very subtle. With digital cables, if you are getting a consistent signal, then there is no quality difference with a different cable. Save your money.

You can't get anymore Elite than Rio Rebel but I also vouch for Monoprice.com's HDMi cables.

IIRC we bought product SKU 2412 which cost $5.25 or so, it works great on our 50" DLP.

I can hook a HDMI cable into my cable DVR box, but only component into the actual TV. How would that effect upscaling with this?

heh, not that I don't need a new DVD player anyway as I still don't have a progressive scan one.

Picked one up this evening, initial opinion is quite positive.

I flashed to the latest firmware, & played a couple minutes of DVD & an xvid encoded file from a flash drive. Both worked great. I haven't had a chance to take a good look at the upconversion, but my impression was that it wasn't much better (if any) than the TV's scaler.

I was pleasantly surprised to see lip sync correction, that wasn't something I would expect from a $63 player.

The menus are a little simple (and awkward to navigate), but after the initial setup I don't expect to use them again. The included remote is junk (that's what I have my Harmony for).

Tested with 1080P HDMI output to a Samsung HL-S6187W, coax digital out.

mine should arrive today, hopefully the cable arrives today also.

so the upscaling is some kind of setting you have to turn on or what? i thought that plugging it into the HDMI port on the TV would make it do it automatically?

i'm pretty dumb when it comes to TVs...

What the difference bewteen HD dixv and divx recorded at 720P.
I have th older model and it can play most file I have that are 720P.
Granted most of my coloection on my PC are only 480p.

I have yet to fine a file it cant play from the Usb port.

PS
I doubt that connection to a Wifi box then out to your PC will work.
First it have to see a Fat32 drive and then pull directly from the drive.
I know some boxs let you map to you pc but i dont think the mapped drive will look right to the DVD player. Good luck if the does work.

What I do is let my Laptop in my room copy files daily on a task from my HTPC. The just pull it off and connect to my dvd play when i want to wtach something. This has been working for me.

got mine today and got it set up.

nice little player but i can't tell a difference between 480p and 1080i

my TV is a 30" Philips HD CRT that only does up to 1080i and it was pretty inexpensive so it may be the TV that is limiting me.

got it hacked to region 0 now also!

without a DVD in the player (works if the dvd is stopped also)
press Setup
select Preference
Press 1,3,8,9,3,1
Press up/down key to select "0"

There is no reason why it should not work in general. BUT, in my particular case, I had formated the hard drive in the NAS enclosure as an EXT3 drive (even though I could have done FAT32). It's too late for me to reformat it, but if you are starting from scratch, you should be able to do it.

Lol, the reason is because CRT doesn't need upscaling, in fact, you probably made the image quality worse. Upscaling is only needed for LCDs and Plasma screens since these are fixed pixel displays and you know if you run an LCD in non native resolution it will look like crap. That's why cheap 1080 LCDs look horrible running 480p video, the resolution doesn't match and the upscaler in TV isn't very good.

CRT on the other hand has dynamic pixel size and any video format it can playback it will resize pixels to fill the screen so you see a perfect reproduction of video feed.
