Does upscaling really look better? Ive got a 57" Hitachi HDTV, would it look better than a normal DVD player?

hmm....1080P? How does one upconvert from 480p to that? I have an upconverting dvd player that does 720p and have yet to notice a difference, even on a projection screen that is 8 feet in width.

Although I'm sure this player is high quality.

i dunno i never say a point in these type of DVD players, i mean all they are doing is instead of displaying 480P lines on the screen (which the screen doubles if you have a 1080p tv) the dvd player doubles the lines and sends them to your tv. But i guess if u need a dvd player then this is a good one to go for.

When upconverting, the player can run various filters like anti-aliasing and all kinds of other words I don't pretend to understand. If you upscale an image in your favorite graphics program like gimp or photoshop, you'll see that different methods of upscaling can produce different results. A picture doubled in size can actually look better. It will never look as good as if the source had originally had doubled dimensions, but it can look somewhat better. Depends on the player, I guess.

i guess the theory is its better to upscale during decode than to take a finished video after all the normally processing and try to upscale it then in the tv.

Upscaling totally works! I tested it out using a regular Philips dvd player (progressive scan, component video) and a Denon 1080p dvd player (HDMI) on my 47" Vizio 1080p LCD screen. There was a HUGE difference in picture quality. No more jaggies, no posterization, good colors.

I currently use my HTPC (nvidia 6800gt, purevideo decoder) to play dvds and I actually like it better than either dvd player (mainly because you can do so much more with a HTPC system).

yes- Upscaling works- I truly thought everyone knew that, otherwise I would have posted some more info.
Anyway, It's like the difference you see when playing a DVD full screen on your PC at say, for example, 640x480 res, or playing it at 1280x1024(or higher) res on your PC. Your (good) video card and/or CPU upscales out the jaggies- like anti-aliasing- and depending on hardware and drivers, can improve picture quality in other ways too (like de-interlacing interlaced video on some old DVDs that were lame conversions instead of remasters). DVD upscalers basically are like CPU/VIDEO card re-renderers, but over HDMI to Hi-def. Ever seen a movie like Toy Story on ABC over OTA(Over The Air) Hi-Def? The source video is not high-def, but ABC used an upscaler- and it was MAGNIFICENT on my brothers 37in Sceptre at 1280x720. And this is really the best option out there for anyone playing DVDs on a 1080P TV/monitor (next to an HTPC at 1080P of course- but alot cheaper and slimmer).
Besides the upconverting, the Philips units have USB direct and supposedly this new model is USB2.0 finally and can basically play almost any type of computer media file ( video (tho some higher/odd resolutions may not play), audio, pics, and compressed formats at that- although some report issues with certain resolutions of video) from a fast flash drive or external HDD.
Som reviews at amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Philips-DVP5982-Up-Scaling-DVD-Player/dp/B000N254LU
And of course check the previously posted AVS forum thread.
ps- I would by one but I do not have a 1080P set yet.. Although being a PC Tech/system builder I would probably go the HTPC/PC route anyway just because I like PC gaming on big screen too...

I've got the last version, the 5960, and as Viper mentioned, the ability to play video through the USB port is great. I just download a TV show rip, throw it on a thumb drive (must be formatted in FAT32) and it plays great. I can't comment on the upscaling feature, although the 5960 does have that, I don't have an HDTV yet. The main features I'd like to see improved upon is upgrading the USB from 1.1 to a 2.0 capability, and support for HiDef DIVX/XVID files, neither of which this player supports.

Overall though I couldn't be more pleased with the Philips DVD players I've had so far.

Upscaling works really well. I have a SONY KDS-50A2000 HDTV and I first plugged in my regular DVD player. The movies looked AWFUL. Then I purchased a SAMSUNG DVD-HD960 from Amazon.com and the results are like night and day!
