Hi,

I am in the process of putting together a new PC. Now, I am at the motherboard/CPU decision stage and was wondering if someone could shed some little on the following scenario. I was originally looking at AMD with new Asus A8N32 SLI board, but then got to thinking.....how long will the AMD CPU's be around as I am sure they will be bringing a new generation of CPU out that will use DDR 2 instead of old DDR ram. Then I thought to myself Intel already supports DDR2 and thus their future processors will support DDR2 for a while still.....this will provide a nice upgrade path for me as opposed to AMD.....well unless AMD still plan on making the CPU's that supports DDR for like the next few years or so. Maybe they will make their newer CPU's backward compatible to run DDR & DDR2....has anyone got any idea's on this scenario.....any info would be greatly appreciated.
 
go the amd route, the next socket for amd will be ddr2 and it is called the m2, but not till april 06, but the skt939s will be around for some time -
Socket M2, the 940 pin DDR2-ready Athlon 64 Socket, will launch a little bit later than we originally expected with mass production just starting in late April. However, even though the launch has been slightly delayed from the original March timeframe, there is still good news for those on DDR1; Socket 939 will stick around well into Q1'07 on the performance desktop - and well beyond that for Sempron. In fact, AMD's latest roadmap goes all the way to Q2'07 with Socket 939 Sempron.

DDR will definately be around for quite a while. Plain SDRAM is still available, and has been long obsolete.

I've been a long time Asus customer, but thier latest enthusiast line has been lackluster.
 
Both DDR2 and SLI are mostly useless. Mostly.

Motherboard: Epox EP-9NPAJ, EP-9NPA+ Ultra, EP-9NPAJ SLI or EP-9NPA+ SLI, depending on desired features
CPU: Athlon 64 3200+ Venice, Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego, Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester or Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo, depending on budget
