New PC

Hi

I'm going to get myself a new pc, but its some while since I purchased my last pc, my current system is a celeron running on a BX chipset motherboard, it's not quite enough for running Far Cry and Half life 2 with all the details.

I want to have most value for the money and I think this is by choosing AMD, but I'm sure this is correct. I have thought about AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and either MSI k8n neo 2 platinium or Abit 9v8, is this a decent value/price choice ?

All help and ideas are welcome, especially if they include details about the hardware. Noice is also an important factor for me, so the components should not be noicy, but completly silence is not a requirement either.

You might want to give us a little information. Like, do you need a monitor? mouse? keyboard? What your BUDGET is?

MSI = The motherboards that always fvck up. I wouldn't TOUCH them and considering the other motherboards are ABOUT THE SAME/BETTER performance than MSI, Fvck it.

I suggest you go Socket 754/939 unless you got more than $1000.

I believe that epox has a decent s939 nForce3 board out that is a great OCer and much more reliable than the MSI board. If you want PCI-e, I would go for the chaintech nForce4 ultra board. It is really cheap and a decent board. Also, are there any parts from the celly PC that you can salvage (HDD, RAM, Monitor, etc.). As posted above, what is your budget?

I suggest getting a Socket 754 processor...since you're using a Celeron on a BX chipset, its pretty clear that you're not a upgrade fanatic, and this system will probably last. Since 754 is cheaper, thats why I recommend that. Upgradability doesn't necessarily seem that important to you.

I have to agree with ItmPls, there are better boards out there. I'd take a look at Abit and Asus' offerings. They tend to make fast, reliable boards.

Zalman has a whole line of silent/very quiet HSF's, I'm using one right now in my HTPC, and they really are significantly quieter then most other HSF's. Also, grab a few 80mm fans and get a fan speed controller to keep the noise down.

Video card wise, we need to know at what resolution you game at to recommend a card. To keep prices low, I'd suggest a Radeon 9800 Pro (cheapest), or a nVidia GFX 6600GT. I'm not too familiar with the newer ATi models though, I have to admit. My 9800 Pro has been chugging along for about a year and I play HL2, Doom 3, and Far Cry at 1280x720 (widescreen).

Let us know what your budget is so we can configure a system that would better match your needs. It's hard to recommend stuff when we don't know how much you want to spend.

The components I'm looking at of most interrest right now is

CPU + cooler
Motherboard
RAM
GFX card
Case

I think the budget is hard to say anything about, because I might change it if there is a better buy for a little more money.

But a system around A64 3000+ gives a good idea I think.
