New PC Starts then immediately stops

Hi,

I just built a new PC last night (specs below). After I was done building it, I hit the power button and I watched as the CPU fan and Case fans started up for a second but then stoped almost immediately.

That's all that happens. It won't boot or get anywhere close to posting. If I try hitting the power button again, nothing happens at all. However, if I unplug the power supply or flip the switch on the power supply and turn it back on again, it will reproduce the original result.

I have double checked all jumpers and switches. I even swaped out the power switch to make sure it wasn't the switch itself. I have already tried swapping out the memory with known good modules. I guess my next course of action will be to replace the Power Supply and take the board out of the case to see if it is shorting out to the case somewhere.

I have never encounterd a problem like this. Is there anything else that could be causing this behavior? Is there anything else that I should do?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra9 mobo

Athlon 64 2800 (socket 939)

WD Caviar 80GB SATA
Sound Blaster Live! 24bit
420watt PSU

It sounds like you have a shorted power lead somewhere, and the power supply is self-protecting. Try reseating your vid card and any other plugin cards and your RAM. If that doesn't do it, you may have to loosen all the mounting screws on your motherboard and insulate it from the case to test it.

Ok, so I completely removed the Motherboard from the case and set it on top of a sheet of cardboard. I left the cpu, memory and Video card plugged in. When I fired the power switch, I still got the same result. The CPU fan powered up for a fraction of a second and then stoped.

I think I will check the Power Supply next. Is there anything else that I should check for, or did my motherboard more or less arrive DOA?

Reset the CMOS.

Perhaps you have set the BIOS to shut down on system fan fail, and the fan isn't reporting its speed to the BIOS correctly (or you use a molex connector for the fan instead of the usual mb 3-pin).

Yep, done that before..

If I reseat the CPU will I have to remove the thermal material and put new thermal material on the heatsink? I'm using the stock heatsink/fan that came with the Processor.

ideally you should. in fact, having arctic silver is always a good idea. but let's just say there will be thermal paste residue on the heatsink which will probably still be pretty much intact so you don't have to really do anything about it.

Thanks for all the help. I finally had a chance to swap the Power Supply, and once I did everything worked great.

I knew it was your power supply. What brand was it? You need a high quality power supply to run your system.

I don't remember the brand on the PSU anymore... I threw it out already...lol. Anyway, I am looking to pick up a new one, one made by Antec. Would a 350watt PSU be enough to power that setup or should I go higher?
