These are all Newegg Prices (I don't mind shopping elsewhere if cheaper):

1 Antec NSK3480 MicroATX Mid Tower Computer Case 380W Power Supply $ 89.99
1 SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD753LJ 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $119.99
1 G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 $ 79.99
1 GIGABYTE GA-G31M-S2L LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard $ 59.99
1 Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor OEM $199.99
1 ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler $ 26.99
1 EVGA 512-P3-N861-AR GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 $149.99 - $20 MIR
Subtotal: $726.93 or $706.93 after MIR

I already have a monitor and wireless mouse and keyboard. I also have a good sound card for recording music.

Power Supply?
I think from browsing the web that the PS on the case will be able to pull the 9600 together with the Q6600 processor. This is one of the main reasons I went with a 9600GT over an 8800GT.

Processor?
I also took the Q6600 over the dual cores because I edit video and photos a decent amount, but I can do dual core if the power consumption is a lot less. I may also stick with stock heatsink if I get a dual core.

Any advice on this? I wouldn't mind spending $100-200 extra if it's a huge difference for the system.

Thanks!

you doing much gaming? I guess we dont really know what the purpose of the system is. I see recording music, as well as video and photo editing. Anything else we dont know about?

You have the OS situation under control andsuch? or do you need a copy of something?

EDIT: BTW! Welcome to the AT forums!

EDIT2: Just as a future reference, usually computer builds get put in the General Hardware subforum (I believe). This forum is usually for computers that are already built from the manufacturer.

A mod might come along and move your thread, so dont be surprised if you can't find it here a little later 🙂

either way, no big deal.

I have a copy of an OS from my old PC so that's taken care of. I really don't game much and use my computer mostly for video, music, and photo editing.
Honestly, 90% of the time I will just be watching movies and surfing the web or using Open Office on the thing.

Mods, please feel free to move the topic. Thanks for the warm welcome!

The 9800 GTX is not much more than 9600GT these days and it's a major upgrade. If you play even one video game it would be worth the upgrade IMO.

only catch is that if you go to the 4850 or the 9800 youll need a new psu, and thatll throw everything off. honestly, for your setup, id say the only thing that you could do better is if you had a copy of 64bit vista and got yourself 8gb of memory 😛.

other than that, lookin good!
