New PC not posting... using 20 in 24

Recently I was able to get a combo of this motherboard and an X2 4200+ for $4 (tax)... and when I got it home and put it all together, it wouldn't POST.

I unplugged HD, CD-ROM and fans, and I'm using a 1Gb stick of PQI 667 memory for the time being.

When I hit the power button without the RAM in (as a test), it powers on and I get the normal no-RAM beep code. When I put the RAM back in and hit the power button, it powers on, but there are no beep codes... it just sits there.

I was thinking it is the PSU, but I'm not sure. It's is an old-ish 400W 20pin PSU I had in another PC.

I figured it would work since I have often used 20pin PSU's on 24pin motherboards for Skt 775 and A... but I have never used an AM2+ board before.

Does socket AM2+ require all 24pins? (In addition to the 4 other pins you plug into the motherboard.)

Thanks!

You should be able to post with just the 20-pin and not the 24-pin, but.....

Does this old PSU have a 4-pin for CPU power? If not, you're not providing power to the CPU and it's not going to post.

That said, if that PSU is THAT OLD there's NO WAY you should be trying to put this thing together without buying a new PSU.

Yeah the PSU has the 4pin for the CPU...

Are you thinking it's a problem with the motherboard then?

I may try another PSU, a newer 24pin one, to test it later this weekend.

Thanks!

Well... your OP confuses me. You said you removed a bunch of stuff... not the RAM? You're using a 1GB stick "for the time being" yet when you post you get the no-RAM beep codes.

Was there RAM installed or not?

If not, and you have only board, CPU and PSU and nothing else, and you got the RAM beeps, that's a good sign.

Did you do all of this with the motherboard OUTSIDE of the case?

Sorry for the confusion... I didn't make it very clear.

Configuration 1:
HD, CD-ROM, 1 stick ddr2 667 ram, CPU, and fans all installed and plugged in
Result:
Everything gets power, but no results on the screen, and no beeps

Configuration 2:
ONLY CPU & RAM
Result:
Power, but nothing on the screen, and no beeps

Configuration 3:
CPU alone
Result:
RAM beep codes

Everything was done with the motherboard in the case and everything mounted.

I was out of town most of the weekend, but when I got back I was going to show the problem to my friend who was over, and it just started right up with no problems.... very odd. At least it's working now!

Thanks for the help!
