new pc not getting video

specs:
K8N Neo Platinum MSI MS-7030 Motherboard
Athlon 3400+ 64
1 GB DDR400
Radeon 9800Pro
ANTEC P-160WF case

it's not getting any video. I've tried two video cards and two monitors. no change. (both monitors and video cards work fine on other systems, too)

checked all the cables, everything seems fine

suggestions?

It has got to be the motherboard then. Is it a new motherboard?

Try your system with the bare minimums. Onc stick of ram, CPU, video card, and hard drive.

If you get nothing then, you mush have a dud motherboard.

there's two sticks of ram, I guess I could try changing that...

yes, the motherboard's new.

the video cards do get power just fine, the fan runs, but no output..

Yes check the ram, and make sure they're in the correct slots. Same thing happened to a buddy a few days ago, he put the ram in the wrong spot and no video.

Try taking the motherboard out of the case, put it on a non-conductive surface, and put in a single stick of ram, the video card, and of course the CPU and heatsink and fan. make sure there are no standoffs out of place, that could be shorting the motherboard to the case.

Try a bigger and Differant PSU.

From my point of view MSI is a shady Phantom company that engages in qustionable buisness practices. They remind me of SOYO.

Ok. We're overtroubleshooting this thing.....

First, fire up the PC without a video card. Do you get an error beep code for no video card? Any beeps?

No? Not the video card.

Now pull out the RAM. Any beep codes? Yes? Then it's probably a memory compatibility problem. Could be a bad board too, so try other RAM.

Still no beeps, though? Ok. Then it's either the board, CPU or PSU. So the best thing to do at this point is as stevty suggested. Pull it back out of the case. Strip the board of anything unnecessary. Just have a CPU in there and power it up. Still w/ no RAM or video card because we're looking for AT LEAST an error beep code. If we don't get an error beep code, you've got a problem with the mobo, CPU or PS. If you do get a beep code, put in the RAM and video card and try to post the PC to your monitor while it's still outside of the case. Once you get it working like that, put it back in the case.

And if you have drives attached at this juncture, I'll have to smack you around. 😉 NO DRIVES until you get a post.

Good point Jonny, I forgot about the beep codes! But if the motherboard is bad he would not hear and beep codes what so ever. Plus If i am not mistaken (manual not near by) there are beep codes for the CPU. So if the cpu is bad then he will hear some extra beeps. I really have a suspicion if there is no beep codes, it is his PSU and It cannot handle the tasks of a newer and larger system.

Which is why I said that if we still get no beep codes with no RAM and no video card, try it again outside of the case. If it doesn't work outside of the case, it could be mobo, CPU or PSU.

You may be mistaken. I wish we could pull the CPU out and get a beep code and then put it in and get no beep code and figure out that the problem is the CPU, but I can't remember a motherboard that gave me a post code for no or bad CPU.

Well, the P160 is a fairly new case. I can only hope it's also a newer PSU. Since maezr hasn't been back here to give us an update since early this morning... who knows! 😀

I agree, mobo, CPU or PSU... my PSU burned out recently, and all the fans would spin and everything, but still no post. Put in a new PSU and now everything is hunky dory. I am willing to put my money on PSU, because CPUs don't usually go out, and I have never had a motherboard go out.

also tried reconnecting absolutely everything. no luck.

have you tried unplugging all your panel wires? (pwr, reset, led's, etc). unplug all but the power one, and try. also, reseat your cpu and reset your bios to defaults.

Not usually, but they can. Also, this is a new build and we've all had our share of DOA components. Then there's the whole "user error" factor that can come into play.

I'm thinking mobo. But I won't bet money on it. 😉

Yes, the Antec P160 is a newcase. But from all of my research; It does not come with a PSU. As with most Aluminum Chasis, the PSU is sold seperatly from the case.

Your right. It doesn't come with a PSU. That's why I said "I can only hope it's a newer PSU" meaning "I hope Maezr didn't buy an old style PSU with only 10A on the 12V for this case." If the P160 came with a PSU, I think we could safely assume that's the PSU being used. 😉 Wouldn't you? 😉

Absolutely, Thanks for getting that through my thick skull!

notes:

1) I tried booting it outside the case on a cardboard box. didn't work.

2) the PSU is CX-450B. 450W. fairly new (has SATA connectors, etc)

3) I haven't tried it without the CPU.. but the CPU was working just fine when it was in another system just a few days before (same with ram, video card)

4) tried it without a video card, no beeps

5) it should normally be able to POST/give beeps without ram? I guess I can try that

6) is there any easy way to determine if it's the CPU or the PSU?

I had a problem with my PC last night, somewhat similar. I got video but no beeps, no post, just stuck on the ASUS mobo screen. Reset the CMOS, all's well. Sounds like you're past that but wanted to throw it out there just in case.

You wouldn't think so but it's a lot easier to try than all you've gone through so far. If it hadn't fixed my problem, I was going to guess PSU next, but I got lucky and didn't have to go that far.

man what's up with these brand new defective motherboards lately!!!!!!!!!!!

i had to replace mine the first time i bought it too 🙁

VERY ANNOYING!

And yes try to reset the CMOS, it doesn't hurt 🙂

Absolutely it's going to beep with no RAM. Haven't you ever heard of a "memory post code?" 😛 🙂 😉

Try it without RAM (but WITH A CPU.) If it doesn't beep, the board's dead.
