Hi everybody,

I'm running Win98se and my hardware is :

- RAM : OCZ DUAL CHANNEL GOLD EDITION 2X256MB DDR PC3700 CAS2 W/GOLD HEAT SPREADER
- HD : MAXTOR 120GB SATA 7200RPM 8MB FDB
- MOTHERBOARD : ASUS P4S800D-E DELUXE S478 655TX DUAL DDR AGP 5PCI SATA 1394 SOUND 1000LAN
- CPU : INTEL PENTIUM 4 P4 3.0GHZ C 512K800FSB S478 HT
- VIDEO CARD : AOPEN GEFORCE 3 TI 200 128MB
- CD WRITER: LG 52x24x52 8520B

I have lots of problems getting stuff running without getting blue screens or crashes. I can't even install DX9 or video card drivers. I tried to boot in Safe mode but I get blue screens instantly. Raid drivers, AGP drivers and USB drivers from SiS doesn't help much. I suppose it's a hardware or bios problem but I can't say exactly what it is. For example, when DX decompresses from a CD-Rom, the system freezes regulary for a couple of seconds and then it goes on, but the installation crashes in the next step (when analysing the PC). Once, I openned three folders one after the other and the system crashed. Help, I can't seem to get anything to work! 🙁

Hi samus535 🙂 For starters, Win98SE inherently has a problem running on CPUs that are over 2.4GHz. Great handicap to start off with, huh? 🙂 Can I suggest getting at least WinXP Home or preferably WinXP Pro (or Win2000 Pro if you like)? They'll make SO much better use of your RAM, too, and you can also use them with more than 512MB (1GB of RAM is becoming the sweet spot from here on out for gaming, looks like).

Other than that, system instability is often the result of a low-quality and/or low-wattage power supply, or memory that's set up to run at really tight timings when the motherboard itself doesn't like them. Are you familiar with what I'm getting at, if I suggest entering your motherboard's BIOS menus and setting your memory timings to 2.5-3-3-7 and setting your memory voltage to 2.7 volts? Also, what brand & model is your power supply?

Anyway, good job on the steps you took already, and for giving detailed info 🙂 I hope it's resolved without too much struggle or cost. If you need a little nudge on that memory timing and voltage thing, see if this thread gives you the right idea. 🙂 Different board, but same basic goal.

I finally tried Win XP Pro. I can copy the file to my hard disk but after it ask to reboot, it makes a blue screen so I can't continue the installation.

Also yesterday night, I tried some of my computer parts in my friens computer and they seems to work perfectly in his computer. The parts I've switch are : The Hard disk, the Video card and the cd writter.

I've tried what you told me about the RAM and the BIOS and it doesn't change anything.

My Power Supply is a Power Max ATX Switching PowerSupply Model No. LP-9900D DC output 400W
