New PC keeps freezing

Hi there, I just finished building a new PC to game with, and for some reason it keeps freezing up! It freezes during games like Half-life2, Freelancer and Counterstrike: Source. It also freezes randomly during testing, such as with 3DMark05, Aquamark3 and SiSoftware Sandra Lite.

Originally this PC had 2GB of pc3200 ram, however after running memtest86 I found one of the sticks was bad (over 1200 errors) and removed it.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this problem would be VERY much appreciated, as this has been happening since day 1 after loading Windows.

The case (not listed in dxdiag) is a Raidmax Scorpio 668 with a 450W PS rather than the 420W listed in the specs.

Cheap PSU = poor voltage regulation = freezes and crashes.

Also test your memory. Download MEMTEST86 and let it run all night (12 hours at least) and see if you get any errors.

Did you install the motherboard drivers for your mobo? The default generic motherboard drivers WindowsXP installs are crap.

The PS is Raidmax brand, model ky-550atx

I've run memtest86 but only for a couple hours. 1 stick of ram had about 1200 errors so I removed it, reran memtest and this one seems fine. I will setup memtest to run when I go to bed tonight tho just to make sure.

Also I installed the mobo drivers from DFI included on the CD at first, in order to get everything working, then went to dfi.com and downloaded and installed updated drivers.

I'm not entirely sure is theres a new BIOS out for my mobo, and if there is I woulden;t know how to replace the old one with this anyway hehe (If there is a new bios please let me know how to replace it?)

Guess it's time to hit newegg for a new PS... any good reccommendations out there?

Antec True Power line is what I swear by. All I purchase for myself and my clients now. They're also very quiet.

Umm well after getting the new PSU from Newegg (Antec truepower 2.0 550W) I'm still getting PC freezing during game play. Possible bad Video Card perhaps?

Actually it's even freezing now while not playing games. Surfing the internet makes this PC freeze up also.

Are you using all updated drivers? I know those old Catalyst drivers were pretty sketchy, I had a new build crash over and over until I grabbed the new catalyst drivers (since then I've switched to Omega drivers).

I didn't have freezes but blue screens. Turned out to be the memory(granted it won't take the OC anymore). Check your memory. I've used generic PSU's and OC'ed and haven't had freezing issues like that. Usually memory. Also, do what Polishwonder74 said, check all drivers for latest versions. ATI catalyst can be really horrible sometimes, go with Omega.

I downloading the new 5.4 catalyst drivers at home while I'm at school/work so I'll update to that build when I get home tonight.

Nothing is overclocked yet (until I get this PC running and stable)

BIOS was updated this morning also to the 10 march 2005 version.

I'll have to check out the Omega drivers for ATI also.

Hmm still no love :( Installed the catalyst 5.4's, then went to the latest omegas and still the freezing happens.
Double checked all the drivers I have loaded to make sure they're the current version, and I'm rerunning memtest86 as we speak.

I'm runnin out of ideas here :(

So did you ever get around to running MEMTEST86 all night? That would settle the memory issue.

Some other ideas:

- Set your BIOS settings to the "Safe" defaults for now.

- Have you installed the motherboard drivers? They should be on a driver CD that came with the mobo. If it's an nForce chipset then you just need to install the nForce driver package.

- Check the Event Log (control panel->administrative tools->event viewer->system) to see if a specific error in a specific application is occuring that might give you a clue.

Hope this helps...

Yeah, this sucks, I hate chasing a ghost like this. Every time I put together a new system, I pray that this doesn't happen.

Could you tell us what brand all the parts are?

Man, I had that login error 189 that people randomly have been getting... fixed it be rebooting my DSL modem.

Anyway,

Hi guys, thanks for the ideas!

FlyingPenguin,
Last night was the second night I've run memtest86 all night without errors on the 1 stick of RAM I have lest in the machine (the other was bad)

Mobo drivers have been loaded, and the updated versions have been downloaded and loaded as well.

Event log has 1 warning in the application log: Userenv EventID: 1517
Windows saved user registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

Also the system log has 1 error: Service Control Manager EventID: 7000
The OrangeWare USB Enhanced Host Controller Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

Just this morning I loaded all of the BIOS safe defaults per your suggestion, but that hasen't fixed the problem yet either :(

video card: Hercules HIS ATI X800 XL 256MB PCIe
sound: Onboard module with the mobo

PS: Antec TruePower 2.0 550W

I don't think it's your memory at all. I think it's your generic ram. Athlon64 motherboards are much more picky with ram in my experience that Intel base motherboards. Generic ram is never the way to go.

You should return your 1GB generic stick and try (2) 512MB Corsair 3200 DDR sticks. Corsair is guaranteed to work with your rig.

Good luck :)

So 2 sticks of 512 running in dual channel would probably be better than 1 1GB stick in single?
That makes sense... but thats why I got 2 1GB sticks (1 is bad tho) Bah spending more and more $$ on this thing :(

because i don't think you need to spend that much on ram. 1GB of ram is plenty for today's games. Use your money more wisely and purchase high quality ram instead of quantity of garbage ram.

Corsair XMS series is one of the best :)

Alright, I have some sticks of pc2700 ram in another machine (crucial) to plug in and try it out...
I'm about ready to take it to a pc repair store here in town to see what they can tell me about it too *grimace*

Hmm ok I have the RAM swapped out and 2 hours of HL2 playing so far no problems (except for only 512MB ram) I'm going to let it sit on all night to test it out, but it looks like it was the RAM the whole time (so far) Will reupdate in the am...

Well, it's been about 12 hours of running Half-Life 2 and the system is still running smooth as silk when it used to freeze up after 15 - 20 minutes.... looks like it WAS the memory after all!!!

I'm beginning to think my PC dosen't like 1GB sticks of ram... the replacement sticks, and even 1 stick are causing the same error again! his is from Corsair VS pc3200 1GB sticks now...
Does anyone know if theres compatability issues with the DFI UT Lanparty Nforce4 Ultra-D motherboards and 1GB sticks of ram?
