New PC, do I need Thermal paste?

I just bought a new CPU/mobo + a new HSF. But I have seen some sites and MAd website with Thermal paste, things like that, do I need this to setup my CPU right? How will it effect my PC if I don't put it on?

Thanks!

yes you should use the paste. It'll help the heat transfer from the chip to the sink. fi you dont you coould experince issues in realtion to overheating. I've seen cases where people havent used the paste and they were over heating, crashing, freeze ups. I've also seen people go without the paste and everything was good. I say get the paste, its cheap and will help.

If your HSF comes with an integrated thermal pad stuck to its base or its own pack of thermal paste, and you're running everything stock, then no, you won't need the thermal paste.

Otherwise, yes you will need some thermal interface material(TIM) between the CPU and the HSF.

The heatsinks that come with thermal paste usually don't use the highest quality thermal paste. I suggest you get a heatsink w/o paste and then buy a tube of Arctic Silver 5, the best thermal grease out there :D.

Is there anything underneath that film, or is it just bare metal? If there's nothing then yes you will need some thermal paste. If you aren't fussy just go to your local radioshack or any hardware/electronics shop and get a blisterpack of generic silicone grease, aka "white goop". If you want the best, get some AS5 or Ceramique, but those will cost like ~10bucks

This is a link to your cooler.
http://www.speezeusa.com/5f353b1l3.asp
If you look at the bottom of the page, the last item is "Thermal type".
And it says "White greesse pre-applied".

I am not familiar with this.
I have seen thermal pad being on many coolers.
If I were you, I would get a bottle of 90% alcohol from pharmacy and clean the bottom of the heatsink from the greese (after peeling off the cover).
I would order Arctic Silver 5 or just get it from CompUsa. Apply very small amount as specified on the Arctic Silver instructions on their web site.

If you are not into overclocking, you can use the heatsink with the stock thermal paste. But, I am not familiar with paste having been "pre-applied". I don't know how they can control the paste from being wiped off while handling. So, that is why I recommend Arctic Silver, which is the best thermal compound.

and make sure not to touch either the base or your cpu die with your bare hands. A ziplock is a good temporary glove.

That's one of the best, so yes it would work fine, except DarkKnight mentioned that it can be purchased for $6 at svc.com.

Alcohol wise, 90% isopropyl alcohol at any drugstore would do.

That has a pad so its not needed, however, wiping that off and putting some artic silver does help somewhat. But then again, it does take longer and is a little bit of a pain

There is no pad according to the product web page that I posted.

No, just wash your hands. Unless this is some new cyanide-enhanced grease or something... :p

Now that my day did'nt have enough stress, should I remove the stock grease and get artic silver 5 or just keep stock? I won't be doing any OCing on an ECS mobo so nothing yet lol.

You can start with the grease that they included. Since the contact area is small, the better-quality thermal grease may end up being worth the trouble if you're going to install the heatsink and leave it on for a long time. Low-quality grease might tend to deteriorate or pump out from between the CPU and the heatsink more easily, since the contact area is small.

All your bros out there are right. Arctic Silver 5 is the one. Go to their site and follow directions. No bigger blob than a grain of rice. Good luck.

Alright so how do I remove the old greece from my new HS? I want to get Artic Silver 5, but had 1 question about it. In the pictures they show just putting a rice size amount on there, do I spread it around? to cover thole black or borwn part? Or just leave it centered?
