Need advice on best componets to build new PC from scratch. Not a gamer but want to use new PC for mutimedia, speed, and keep for 3 years out.

Looking foir advice on piece parts and recommended vendors I can purchase from.

Case: optimal for cooling.
Power Supply
CPU- AMD or Intel?
Hard drive-SATA? Capacity recommendations.
Video Card
RAM- how much-512 meg or 1 gig.
OS? XP Pro or Home? Other?
Cooling fans-Quiet Ones.
CD-ROM
DVD Burner
Anyhting else I should get?

I would go AMD regardless if you are gaming or not. AMD gives you more bang-for-buck. The only reason to go Intel ios if you are doing high end video encoding and have alot to spend on it.

As for case I would probally get a Antec combo with 350w PSU. What exactly is your budget on this whole system though?

I agree. I would recomend you get a gig of ram minimum, you can get 2 512 sticks for $140 almost anywhere.

Thanks. Just checked my messages. Thinking about spendiing a little over $1,000. Too little? May want to run a dual boot and load Linux (somehting new for me) and have a Linux server set up.
 
Get a Athlon 64 2800 or even a 3000 (obviously 3000 is more expensive and performs a tad bit better.

As for motherboard a Chaintech VNF3-250 would be good

For hard drive Seagate is a great brand. If you need alot of space get a Seagate 200GB

Get 2x512 of cheap Mushkin RAM.

Get the NEC 16X Double Layer DVD burner

Since you are not doing any sort of gaming find a cheap card to use. Maybe a 9200SE or something.

GEt a floppy drive as they come in once in a while

Microsoft has a comparison of XP Home and Pro. YOu can decide which one you need. I don't think you will need the extras in Pro though so Home should be fine.
 
I don't know about the power supply that comes with the antec case you linked to ...... it only has 16 amps on the 12v rail. I'd recomend 20 amps as the absolute minimum, 24 or more is much better.

Roffles... I didn't notice that the mobo was left off of his list (I just quoted, added comments, and removed the quote tags)... I guess pwnage of yourself is to be expected when you try to post at 7:30 AM on a Saturday.

Try a Chaintech VNF3-250 or an Epox or Soltek in that price range. If you want 1394, though, look into a board like the DFI Lanparty (I know you probably won't be overclocking, but the board is around the same price as others with 1394, like the K8N Neo Platinum, last I checked).
