New PC Build - System Lock

I've finally completed building my first ever PC from scratch and im happy that i've gotten this far, i have one last problem left.

My rig is a amd 64 3200 with the Chaintech ZNF4 mobo, 1GB of corsair ddr, i got an ati radeon x700 pro, 500W 20pin Ultra X Connect UPS.

When I try to run games or almost anything pretty hefty for the cpu i guess, my system freezes up and no mouse or keyboard movement is taken and im forced to restart. I thought it was overheating but i checked the temperature and its at an ok 36C.

Could it possibly be the power supply? I'm using a 20pin to 24 pin power adapter to convert my PSU to the right pin # since the motherboard is 24pin. could that be causing problem? if not, anyone have an idea?

Do you have any other power supplies you could try, such as a 400W+ Antec, Enermax, Fortron, something recognized as a good-quality brand? Also, make sure your RAM's getting adequate voltage... what precise model of Corsair is your memory?

Ok, but Corsair makes... what, four or five different flavors of PC3200. What is yours, C2, ValueSelect, XL, LL or Pro?

ValueSelect or C2: try 2.7 volts
XL, LL or Pro, or the crazy new one with the LED readouts: try 2.8 volts
