Hello Everyone,

I am finally going to make a new build from scratch and need help as I have been out of the loop since 2011. I recently bought Oculus Rift and my goal is to ensure I can run games seamlessly for at least 2-3 years. I am hoping for your input as to which parts to go with and I am looking to keep it in the intel lineup. I also want to use my new build for heavy use of Photoshop/lightroom. I will be using my current case which is Thermaltake Level 10 GT. My budget is $1500-1700 Canadian for now.

Would greatly appreciate your input so I can purchase most of the parts today.

Thank you All!

Maybe you should look at the games you want to play recommended specs to give you some clue on what to get. Since you are also doing heavy use of Photoshop and Lightroom as well, perhaps go with 32GB of memory and a large SSD along with maybe an i7-8700 or Ryzen 7 1700 CPU?

I could have sworn the OP said he wanted to keep his build Intel. OP, do you overclock? What res are you planning on playing/working with?

This is all very great information and much appreciated.

I do not overclock and really not looking to getting into OC as I do not have time to invest and learn OC. I used to OC 10-12 years back and my intention is to get something that will last be a good 2-3 years with minor upgrades in future. I am really torn between Intel CPU or AMD CPU. Editing will take advantage of the Ryzen I feel and gaming will be better utilized for Intel.

My main games will be iRacing, Assetto Corsa and survival horror games as well as watching movies. I only tested yesterday The Climb and I was just amazed with how I was so immersed in the game and almost fell while standing.

This is great...Thank you!

I think I will upgrade the SSD to at least 500gb or more. Ram i do not feel i will need more than 16gb as I was considering 32gb ram. I will add windows 10 as well.

I would go with a 8700 non-K cpu and grab a GTX 1080Ti for your graphics card. Asrock, Asus, and MSI all make great motherboards for that cpu and you should buy one with the features you need. A 256/512GB SSD for a boot drive and a nice 2TB hard drive for storage will be good. Get at least 16GB of 3200 DDR4 and last but not least grab a minimum of a 1440p monitor. If you can find a sale price G-Sync I would get that. 650w PSU will be fine as long as you get a good brand like EVGA, Corsair, Seasonic.

Well make sure the motherboard you are picking out has four DIMM slots and buy 2x8GB modules for now and if turns out that you do need 32GB of memory you can always add more.

p.s. If the 1080Ti busts the budget then grab a 1070Ti.

Can't agree with the Ryzen recommendations due to your need for high fps with VR as well as heavy use of Photoshop and Lightroom, all areas where the latest Intel chips excel and significantly outperform the AMD CPUs:
Gaming with 1080 Ti: http://www.pcgamer.com/intels-8th-gen-processors-deliver-a-huge-jump-in-performance/
Photoshop: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/a...700K-i5-8600K-i3-8350K-1057/#BenchmarkResults
Lightroom: https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/a...ormance-Core-i7-8700K-i5-8600K-i3-8350K-1056/

I would either get the i7 8700 or 8700K based system, depending on whether you wish to overclock or not. Would definitely try to get a 1080 Ti in there as well, although it may push the $1700 budget.

I am considering if I should go for the below specs. Seller is local to me and is asking $1700 cdn or (1,328 USD)

Clean Alienware Aurora R4

i7 4930K 6 Core/ 12 thread 3.4GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) Unlocked
16GB Ram (4X4gb ram)
256GB Adata SSD
500GB HDD (Hitachi drive)
Zotac GTX 1080 TI AMP Edition (Brand New, no packaging)
875W PSU - Two 8 Pin PCI-E + Two 6 Pin PCI-E
Wifi enabled
Genuine Windows 10 Home

I understand the CPU is limiting but is that a good price? I think if i can offer and close on $1500 ($1,118 USD) is that worth it?

At that price I expect a larger HDD say, 2TB?

well the above pc sold for 1660 to someone else.

So now I am deciding to go with the i7-8700k along with 1080 ti build. Looking for assistance with following:

MOBO
RAM 16gb
SSD drive 500gb
Power supply

Thank you.

I would get a bigger SSD then 500GB and a 550W 80+ Gold PSU should be fine. I would even consider 32GB of memory as well.

550W for a 8700k + 1080ti?

o_O

isnt that cutting it a bit close?
85969.png

Shows a vanilla FE edition 1080ti drawing almost 400W... which leaves less then 150W reserve...

That is VERY VERY tight in wattage especially if the OP is getting a Overclocked 1080ti...

I Would probably recommend at least a 650W to be on the safe side and also save that psu from being placed under high load all the time.

There is a guy in the fs/ft forum selling a great Ryzen 1600X and mobo for I think $280 shipped, that will oc to 4ghz (You wanted intel, but look at that price, you cant even touch a Intel chip that will keep up with this one for even the price of this guys combo ;) )
16gigs of trident 3200mhz ram is I believe $149 at Newegg right now
A b stock 1070 at evga is $429 or a used one can be had cheaper in the fs/ft forum maybe
1000GQ Gold Evga B stock for $119
Then what ever HDD or SDD, 2tb hdd for around $70-$90, or a 256gb (hardly any space LOL) for same price :p (but it will be faster)
Then slap it all into this (I know you wanted your own case, but come on, look at it :O)

OK maybe going to 650W Gold PSU wouldn't hurt.
