Well just like the other thread I started but new parts for $1000 so you don't have to read thru 2 pages. This is the build. $1000 budget.

XION XION-BK Black ATX MID TOWER CASE 4X5.25 2X3.5 4X3.5INT 120MM REAR FAN 450W W/ LED FAN & WINDOW $95.88

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Dual Core Processor S939 Manchester 2Ghz 512KBX2 90NM Retail Box $385.02

EVGA E-GEFORCE 6800GS SLI 256MB 256BIT GDDR3 PCI-E VGA DVI-I Video Card Retail Lifetime Warranty $259.92

ASUS A8N-E Motherboard ATX S939 NFORCE4 Ultra DDR PCI-E16 PCI-E4 2PCI-E1 3PCI SATA RAID Sound GBLAN $128.23

Corsair Value Select PC3200 1GB 2X512MB DDR400 184PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit $128.23

Seagate Barracuda 250GB 7200.9 8MB 11MS ATA/100 NCQ RoHS Hard Drive $115.39

Total: $1,095.76 CAD +shipping fees. Remember this is canadian.

How would this work for playing CS:source and WOW? I have the worst computer right now and I can play regular counterstike 1.6 so don't say it can't even play it. The computer I am on right now has a bad ciruis laguna video card and a 9gb HD.

Thanks in advance.

For that money you can't really afford a dual core CPU, drop it down to a single core opteron and get a 7800GT and maybe 2gb of RAM.

I'll rephrase, for a gaming computer you can't afford to spend that much money on a CPU rather than the GPU.

If you go for a single core CPU then you will save enough money to buy a better graphics card, which will give much better performance.

Yeah well if you read I said in canadian dollars. Considering newegg is in american of course it looks like its the same price.

Oh ok I understand. So just drop it down to single core and get a better video card? Can I still get an AMD 3800+ or is 3800+ only dual core. And atybimf does having one stick of 1gb cost more than the 2x 512?

If you're going to overclock then the best buy would be an opteron 144 and then overclock it. All the opterons OC like mad, yet to see a case of them not hitting silly speeds.

Ones stick of 1gb RAM is around the same cost as 2x512.

lol, I don't think he's ready to delve into overclocking - he just today decided to build this PC 😛.

No I have been thinking about this for about a month and a half. Just waiting on someone to buy my bike but then asked on a different just general forum if this was good and they said you can get something better for the same price so I came here and have found out how much this store was ripping me off. But no I didn't just decide today.

Yeah scoobs this doesn't look good.

Overclocking is forcing the CPU to run faster than it's supposed to, there are some risks to it, but many people think the benifits (which can be massive) are worth the risks. There is a detailed thread on how to do it in the overclocking forum.

This will be the first time I have a good computer. I have spent all my money on building my bikes. And right now I am on the crappest computer but it plays counter strike and thats all I can really play as it only has a 9GB HD.

Don't worry too much, we all have to learn sometime 😉

You don't have to overclock btw. You can get a very nice computer with your budget and not have to overclock. I'd still advise a single core CPU with or without overclocking.

Well I will overclock for sure when I learn how.

But referring to your post about Opterons I would like an AMD athlon but This processer sounds good.

But if I may not be overclocking for a bit until I learn should I just get an athlon 3800+ ??

You could, however it would mean that money better spent on your GPU would go to waste on the CPU.

The opteron is best thought of as a FX 57 set to a lower clock speed, they are meant for server enviroments which are much more demanding than desktops. As such they tend to overclock very, very well.

OK but with getting the athlon 3800+ I meant single core not dual. Will the CPU your talking about the same price as a single core athlon 3800+ ??

The 3800 is a 2.4Ghz processor (it's called a 3800 as it's roughly as fast as a P4 running at 3.8Ghz)

With overclocking 144s have hit as high as 2.7Ghz or more, but it's pretty much certain you can get 2.5Ghz + out of it if you try. That's the CPU i meant yes.

That RAM is DDR2, which doesn't work with Athalon systems, you want the cheapest DDR 2x512 RAM you can find or a single 1gb stick if you think you'll upgrade sooner rather than later, the extra money you spend on RAM to get premium stuff isn't cost effective.
