For 30k you can start to buy luxury cars. Hell maybe some end of the year BMW's

A loaded Passat 3.6 will run you about $37-38k. The 3.6 starts at $30.5k.

I found this: the passat costs 25% more than the accord but has much more performance and luxury. I think this is a bit much...i could accept a 15% premium but 25 is too much.

More luxury and performance? An Accord EX V6 6-speed would likely smoke a Passat. Would probably outhandle it too.

As for more luxury, you can get an EX with all the frills (leather, NAV, fancy stereo, etc)

naw, you're wrong...the accord does 60 in 6.7, while autoweek said that altho the passat lists it at 6.6, its faster.

I said HonDUH Accord EX V6 6-speed. The Passat doesn't even offer you a stick on the V6. And the only way to get the stick on the Passat is with the 2.0t and with no options AT ALL and vinyl seats

??? ok, so a v6 passat with an auto transmisison is faster than a stick v6 accord.

You make it sound like stuff is revolutionary. It isn't. It's still smaller inside than a Maxima or Avalon or Accord or Sonata and the Japanese sedans have been in a horsepower war for the past few years.

Tell me exactly of all of that stuff you mention, what exactly makes it stand out against the competitoin?

well its not a flying car...and it doesnt drive itself...it doesnt get 500 mpg...so i guess nothing.

also, which of the other cars you mentioned have been revolutionary?

None of them. That's the point. You're making it seem as though the Passat has some sort of trump card over the competition. It doesn't. That's why sales are flat, that's why it won't catch any new buyers, and that's why it doesn't stand out in the field.

Now that I come to think of it, here's one thing. The Honda can be had in a Hybrid version and the next generation Camry due in Spring '06 will have a Hyrid Synergy system.

6.7 seconds is for a Honda Accord EX Auto. The stick would be more than few ticks faster. Sheesh, this is tiring.

Oh, I thought of a revolutionary feature of the new Passat. The pededtrian friendly front bumper/fenders!!!!! 😀

hmm...the website i got that info from said it was a stick...hmm...my bad. ok, but when the passat manual gearbox does come...it'll be pretty sick, i'm gonna wait and see that. I prefer to get more from my car than just a point a to b driver.

i think VW's reputation in the late 90s and early 00s of having horrible reliability and rampant electrical problems is going to be hard to overcome...at that price point of the new VW, i'd rather buy a luxury car

i think most people buy accords and camry's for the reliability and dependability...at least that's why i did. i don't really care about the frills.

also, i used to like the A4...but man, the newest generation looks ugly from the back! VW is shooting themselves in the foot

vw should bring a diesel version

also, have you ever sat in a vw?

I saw one of these on the road the other day and was really struck by how far it's fallen. The prior Passat was such a clean, handsome shape (though IMO they cluttered it up a with a little too much chrome on the most recent models). The new one is, IMO, ugly, and has a lot of fussy details, a less-pleasing shape, and a huge, hideous chromed-plastic grill. No friggin' way would I buy that thing. IMO the Touareg is probably the most attractive VW nowadays, which is odd.

Sure have. They have nice interiors. But so do Acura and Lexus for that money

Who needs a stick if you have that awesome double clutch transmission

Quit arguing man...there's no way you're going to change his mind.

I would touch a Honda with a 10 foot pole...but that's just me, and my own personal preference...I hate japanese cars...not because I think they're unreliable...but because I simply DON'T LIKE THEM...

If NSF4 doesn't like Kraut then let him not like Kraut...his own decision.

Not available on the Passat 3.6 (not sure about the 2.0t). It IS however available on the MKV Jetta 2.0t and MKV GTI

In the configurator it seems it is the only available - they call it tiptronic sequential sport shift - I guess that is the DSG

i was checking out the new passat the other day at the local VW dealership. ive never been a fan of the passat platform, but i have to say that I was highly impressed with the looks and the interior of this passat. very well done

I STILL love the B5 design. It's so clean and crisp. It's shame that had to do chrome it up with the B5.5

I love my burgundy B5 Passat. Even though it is nearing 100k miles..I want to drive it till the next timing belt change, at least.

Must...chip..it..

Oh..and what is nice about the new 2.0T, is that with a chip, it can get up over 240hp and 280lb-ft.

A freaking Subaru Legacy GT will run you upwards of $33k depending on the options and bling you slap on it.

The line between luxury and "mainstream" is really starting to blur.
That Legacy will blow those other cars into the weeds performance-wise though. 0-60 in 5.8, AWD, superb handling. The interiors are nice too, thought not at quite the level of the Passat.
