new partition for linux

I currently have a secondary hard drive (known as drive F) and it contains most of my downloads and installed games, movies and music.

I want to create a new partition on this drive, using partition magic 8.0, and install linux on it

I am worried that i may lose all my data. Is it likely that data will get lost? are there any other problems i may run into?

There is always a potential to lose data when you resize partitions (assuming that is what you will do), though if you use decent software and follow the instructions carefully it isn't likely. Make backups for peace of mind and defrag the drive first.
