New p4 CPU has heat tape instead of paste

I just got a new 2.6 GHZ P4 and there is real thick black tape on the bottom of the Heatsink instead of the usual paste. The black tape is not sticky and appears to be about 1mm thick. Am I supposed to peel off a layer of the tape to reveal a sticky compound?

I plan on Overclocking so would I be better off getting rid of the tape and using paste?

Do you mean a "thermal pad"?

If you are OCing... it ll be better do remove the pad (Use 99% Isopropyl Alcohol) and get some Arctic Silver in there....

It is a thin foil with the black TIM stuff on both sides. If you want to use something else, peel the foil off and clean up what is left.

Did you clean off yours? What is the preferred thermal paste now?

I left mine on (and still playing with my O/C's - raising the FSB makes a significant performance increase; it's at 217FSB 2:3:3 and completely stable - goin' higher later).

I'm using an aftermarket HS/F.

Aftermarket HSF or stock, thermal compound is still miles better than the "tape" that comes with retail bundles.

How much degrees difference is miles better? If the person doesn't put the grease on right then what? Any testing available where someone used a heatsink with pad then took it off and tested the same heatsink with grease? Found some tests looks like about 7-8 degrees difference between the best compound and the pad.
Grease for OCing pad fine if your not

Are you sure? I have a 2GHz Celeron (I know what you are going to say so you can spare it :) ) overclocked to 2.66GHz without peeling off anything off the pad and it runs ~48C under load.

I installed it with a friend of mine who works at a computer shop, and he said they never peel off anything from the retail Intel CPUs heatsinks.

The new ones - I just got a 2.80cGhz P4 this week - only have the [really thin compared to the old pads] thermal black tape - no plastic skin to remove.

Weren't thre some issues with Artic Silver a year or so ago?

(I let my rig "go" for awhile (i.e. - no upgrades) and am out of the loop).

Anybody know anything about the new Intel thermal black tape?

Not sure about that - all I know is that the "OMG, OCZ compound doesn't have as much silver" story got posted about 218796432 times in the past month, so I might stay away from them. There's also AS5 out now.

Try http://www.dansdata.com

He has spent a ton of time testing heatsink/fans with various pastes/tapes/etc...even toothpaste.

I couldn't find anything at Dansdata about benchmarks for different thermal paste. Could you give me a direct link?

Sure.... Here's the first one I find....

Test of various Thermal and not so thermal compounds..

Here's one that compares pads/tapes..../

Thermal tapes and stuff.

Talk of coolers....neat little experiments.

coolers

Installing a cooler... Good read even if you've done it...

Installing a cooler properly

Hope those help. His site isn't the best organized, but he is a rocket scientist at this stuff, and writes some very decent well researched reviews....
