New P4 build- no post :(....

Hey guys,

Just jumped on the Northwood bandwagon, and got a Northwood 1.6A P4 and an Asus P4B266.
I've done a lot of system builds, but this was my first P4.
Anyway, I prep everything, mount the cpu, put on the heatsink, throw some ram and agp in. And no post.
Now I start to twiddle and figure out what's going on. I think it might be my case so I take it out and have it on the ground. It does post once, and I was in the bios looking at stuff. I then turn it off and try to attach a hd. Now when I power on it doesn't post again.

Fast forward after a lot more screwing around, and I finally get the asus speaking beep code thing (ie. "no keyboard detected")

Well the weird thing was, it said "CPU test failed due to overclocking"

Now this really surprises me because I haven't even thought about oc'ing at this point. I figure what the hell though, and decide to use the jumpers instead of jumper free mode, to make sure there isn't a bad fsb or multiplier setting.

No luck after that though, and now I can't get it to do or say anything. It did work once which makes me more mad than if it didn't at all.

Is there something I should be doing? What else can I try?

first, are you using the E-Zplug or the 12v 4-pin connector? second, what size (wattage) power supply are you using?

I've got a highpower 340W PSU that i've used on a dual cel board and lots of drives w/no problems.

The psu actually has the p4 plug, but i've tried both (not at the same time)

Does the chip smell burnt?

Seriously though, maybe you can borrow a buddy's Sock 478 board to see what happens with your stuff...

I was using 2 sticks, then I just tried with one.

Do I need to use paste between the cpu and hs? it didn't come with any and i assumed the black stuff on the bottom of the heatsink was a thermal tape thing

Are you using 2 sticks of ram?

did you use paste between the heatsink and cpu?

Try it with just 2 sticks of ram, cpu/heatsink/fan (with paste), and video card. if it boots then start adding stuff. (also might want to connect the internal case speaker to listen to the beep codes.)

If it does not post, but gives beep codes look the codes up and see what it means.

you're not using registered DDR RAM are you? cause i don't think registered RAM works on the i845D chipset.

I just found out Post meant Power on Self Test a few months ago...which makes a lot of sense.

This sounds like a different case, but I read somebody else thread the other day. They couldn't get their computer to post, but didn't have any error codes either. They had to set the dipswitches to the correct multiplier, sixteen for you. This got the computer to post and from there they could flash the bios to recognize to Northwoods. Don't know if this will help you. Good luck.

Meaning that you have connected the standard ATX connector and the 4pin 12volt connector?

I also had this problem on a new Asus P4T-E and I had to remove the 1.9ghz cpu and replace it with a 1.7ghz cpu. It would boot fine with the 1.7ghz so i put the 1.9ghz back in there and it worked fine. Maybe you should try removing and reinstalling the cpu to see if that fixes it.

Yes,
I understand how the power works. I always have the big atx plug connected, and I've tried with either the p4 4plug or the standard molex connected.

About to try w/o cpu to see what happens...
