New Orleans Police Department

Hello everyone, I need some feedback. Later June me and a few friends are going to New Orleans to apply for the police department. I'm currently living in a small town in Michigan working for the Department of Corrections (prison guard). I'm 25 and make around 40k/year. I have never been to a large city. My question is has anyone been to New Orleans and/or know anyone who has worked for the police department? Would it be even worth my time? The pay isn't that much more...

My largest concern is the high crime rate and getting to know the area, as I have never driven in a larger city.

-The crime rate is very high in there, choose another place to be a cop
-Being a cop sucks
-Where's my free ipod?

Welcome aboard man. Life will be crazy for the first year or so. You'll gradually get used to the city and the job. For the most part it'll be thankless, and the pay won't be amazing. But it'll be a shitload more interesting on a day to day basis then an office job.

Never lived there...but NOPD has a *horrible* reputation for being corrupt to the core.

Probably some degree of that in just about any PD, but , NO does not get very good media.

Which means the pay is much better than advertised.

I would try to get answers from some members here that are LEO's. JLee is one that comes to mind and I know there are a few others. Try to remember when asking your above question that everyone has an opinion about law enforcement and its usually a negative one, these forums are no different.

NOPD is notorious, and historically stands next to CPD and LAPD as the worst police forces in the country.

GL if you go, but it may be best to stay the hell away.

Only been a cop a couple years? My friends used to say just what you said. After about 10 years as an officer, it sounded more like this. "Same shit, same people, all the time. It's like clockwork. Friday night, 2 am, Bob is drunk, hits his wife/gf. She calls us, refuses to press charges. We're at that house about 3 times a month. Sunday at 2pm, Gloria calls up because her ex had custody for the weekend and is 4 minutes late bringing the kids back to her house..."

Unfortunately, this man is correct. New Orleans, with the exception of Mardi Gras time, is a shithole and their PD isn't exactly known for it's high standards. Atlanta PD, CPD and LAPD are all in there as well (Although both LAPD and CPD are making a turnaround with the current admin). You may not be corrupt, but its not exactly a place I'd want to start out as a cop or stay for any more then 2-3 years. If you want a decent sized department, state troopers are some of the most respected, various county units, or sizable suburbs outside the giant mega-cities are pretty good.

Can I ask why you are going that far to become a cop?

EDIT: And yes, I am a current LEO.

I was only a cop for 18 months. But by the end nothing really surprised me anymore.

im a capricorn.

OP, why NO? As others already said, NOPD is famous for corruption and bad cops. If you have a college degree, try Plano PD (north of Dallas). They pay better (50K to start IIRC).

Why would you travel that far for not much more money? Better off going someplace with lower crime and higher average income like Vermont or something.
