New Opteron 175 running hot? Idle at 43C????

I just upgraded my Athlon64 3200+ (939) to an Opteron 175. I installed it with the retail HS/F and I think its running hot. The CPU Core temp idles between 42C to 45C and when I game it gets so hot that my computer freezes. I have read that others have their Opteron 175?s idle around 30C, when my system boots it?s not 30C.

Here is some info:
Motherboard is a MIS Neo4-F (Bios 1.D0)
AMD Opteron 175 (Toledo) Revision JH9-E6
CPUz info
Temp from SpeedFan

When I tried reseating the HS/F I notice that the HS was not very hot. I was expecting the copper pipes to be really hot to the touch.

Did I get a bum CPU? Or HS/F?

Are you sure it freezes cause it gets too hot? I'd suggest you bump up the CPU volts a bit. At least to where CPUZ reads 1.35 - 1.37. When you re-seated, did you remove, clean, and re-apply thermal paste? Or just wiggle the HS around a bit?

wow I just posted the same issue with my opty 165 I got yesterday and I have the very same mobo and same bios version

I left the CPU volts as the default; I figured it would be set correctly automatically. When I re-seated the HS/F I did not clean and re-apply thermal paste. The Retail box HS/Fs come with thermal crap already on them. That is all I have ever used.

Also i just noticed that my CPUZ is reporting my Processor as a Toledo, I thought the X2's were Toledos and the Opterons are the Denmark core???

tornadog: did you ever find a resolution to your problem?
I was thinking about trying my old Athlon64 3200+ HS/F.

no I am going to try my old zalman 7000 cooler and see if it makes any difference

Edit: I removed the paste under the stock heat sink and applied some zalman stg1 paste and now temp is 31 degrees at stock speed...Will let it run for a while before trying to overclock!

Ok?update time

I reseated the HS/F again, this time cleaning and re-applying thermal paste seems to run a bit cooler, idle at 40C. I tested with StressPrime 2004 Orthos and it got up to 56C and did not crash.

However when I gamed my system still crashed.

I read on a few other forums that people were having a problem with the Opteron PowerNow Driver. It was suggested to uninstall PowerNow and install the Microsoft one Link I did that and my computer stopped crashing. My Opteron 175 still gets upto 56C when I am gaming, but I?m guessing that is ok.

Anyone know what the max temp the Opteron 175 core should get to?

Don't worry about CPUZ reporting it as a Toledo, it really is a Denmark. What does CPUZ report your CPU V. as? Personally I do not use any of those power management programs. Have you turned off Cool & Quiet in the bios?

My Opty 165 sits at around 28C at idle, but only with C'n'Q enabled and with a good heatsink. At full load it will hit 56C. 43C at idle without C'n'Q and with the retail hsf does not sound unreasonable. You need to find what temp it hits when it freezes. Anything above 60C will need attention.

Still freezing when i play Marvel Ultimate Alliance but not when i play Oblivion. I dont think the CPU is getting to 60C, when it does freeze i reset it and check the bios and its never that high.

I also ran StressPrime 2004 Orthos for over 30 mins and the CPU never got above 56C.

I dont want to turn off C'n'Q as i like to keep my PC on 24/7 so its okay for it to slow down when im not using it.

Any other Ideas, i am thinking it might be memory???

It's the game that's crashing your system...Marvel Ultimate Alliance is hardly stressing compared to Oblivion.

It doesn't sound as if it is fully enabled. Your temp should be in the range 26-34C if it was. Anyway, it doesn't look as if temps are a problem. 56C at full load is about right. Your CPU voltage seems low. I would up it to at least 1.35v which is what it should be. System freezes are more of a symptom of low CPU volts rather than memory errors which tend to give a BSOD.

Did you install the "AMD Dualcore Optimizer"???
This one crashed my Opteron 175

Did you install the latest driver from AMD???

And don`t trust speedfan temp. It reported 60C on mine (BIOS: 43C)
i`m using Opteron 175 with AMD boxed Cooler (not OC)

for more accurate temp reporting try coretemp. it reports the temp as recorded by the cpu's on-die whatever, not the less accurate mobo measurement.

even tho i took the IHS off, the temps of my 175 were outta control (>65*C) until i installed a tuniq tower last night. after installing, i ran dual prime for a few hours and neither core got hotter than 44*C. idle 29/30*C.

dunno what cpu driver i have installed tho 🙁 make sure your cpu volts are set to 1.35V (as reported by coretemp), all your fans are blowing in the right direction, and that your cpu fan is goin 100%.
