Which of thier previous albums is it most like? On Lamentations they said they might be doing some kind of "bridge into black metal"thing, but ive been told from people who've heard it already, that they didnt exactly go through with that.

A lot like blackwater park/deliverance but way more mature, vocals are 1000x better, riffs are amazing, it's more technical than their previous works.

QFT. This album is insane... I had it on repeat all weekend, and it's still totally awesome. IMO it combines the best parts of Blackwater Park, Deliverance, and Damnation, and the addition of a keyboardist adds more to their sound, which is utterly fantastic. :D I'd say it's more black metal than death though, the death vox weren't used as much on this CD. Needless to say I'll be buying it the day of release.

Wait, it's officially released? I thought it was coming out at the end of August. I've heard The Grand Conjuration (heard it live for the first time ever!) and Ghost of Perdition and they kick all sorts of ass. Can't wait to get it. I'll probably pick this and the new Arch Enemy up soon.

Okay, so I was right. I'm going to wait until it's officially released to listen to it. Everything is so much better when you listen to it on the way home from the music store. :)

Normally I agree, but man, I couldn't resist! Been waiting for this ever since Damnation... man, was it worth it! :)

It is indeed quite good. Though my personal favorite is still Morningrise, followed by Blackwater Park. However, this is probably the best CD I've heard in at least a year.

To Bid You Farewell is a mind blowingly awesome song.

Well, a lot of people who like Opeth like dream theater, but theyre not really that similar at all. The best description i can give is creepy themed melodic death metal.

Geeez... this guy sounds like a demon. How can you listen to this? I'm all for experimentation, but this has no value.

That is EXACTLY why I love Opeth. Mikael has an incredible death growl. I can actually understand most of what he sings, and it sounds so menacing as well. He has a really nice clean voice too.

All Death metal bands use the growling style of vocals. If you don't like this because of the growls, then don't listen to any death metal ever. It is not for all.
Or just give a listen to their "Damnation" CD as it is pretty much 100% "clean vocals" with no growls.

Some of their more mellow stuff sounds a bit like Porcupine Tree, however, that is a bit of a stretch. They really don't sound like anything out there. They are quite unique. Every album they release is different from the one before. It's amazing how they keep changing the style of the albums over time, and yet every CD that they release is one of my all time favorites.

Anyone here who likes the Heavier side of opeth should listen to Bloodbath - Resurection Through Carnage & Bloodbath- Breeding Death ... You get two of the greatest metal gods performing together in the same band Akerfeldt & Swano playing death metal with a hint of grind in a bit of an old school late 80s early 90s death style.
