The only one I ever saw was on my PII HP Pavilion (1998). It had a separtate amp that connected to the sound card and had outpurs for the Polk Speakers that came with the computer. Unfortunately, after 15 months, the power supply blew and took out the amplifier and the speakers, forcing me to buy some Klipsch's instead ( the sound card itself was not damaged). It was a pretty nice setup while it lasted, but I have also noticed that HP and Compaq don't do that anymore.

And, BTW, some sound cards back at the dawn of time could be jumpered such that the output could supply fleapower to small passive speakers or, jumpered the other way, the outputs would be line level for self-powered speakers. Almost none had any significant power output. For a while there, NEC was selling a kit that had a stereo amp/equalizer that fit in a 5" drive bay and powered some nice 2-way passive speakers (I still have one of the speakers if anyone needs one). But such things were few and far between.

Clean but VERY basic. I only saw one stereo pair, though that green "looks-like-VGA" port could be a breakout box for all kinds of inputs. [shrug] No speak-o the lingo, though.

Onkyo is a mid/high end audio company, they make awsome receivers.

i have a friend with a year old onkyo reciever/6.1 750W system that ran him like $600. price is not really an issue if the hardware is worth it. anybody know if one of these cards would fit it well

Is there any point to these sound cards if you are only going to use the optical out and connect it to a receiver? (No jitter talk please) Is there processing done on the audio signal by the chip before being sent out or is the digital signal sent out digital?
