here is a new one, i just changed the stock thermal compound with some artic silver. the heatsink was stuck to the cpu and when i pulled on the heatsink it pulled the cpu out of the socket. no visible damage and the cpu locks back in place but when i turn the computer i get a black screen now. everthing gets power but my moniter stays in standby mode. could i have damaged the cpu? any ideas?

the heatsink was stuck to the cpu <- How did that happen?
Did you use the adhesive artic silver instead of the normal arctic silvers which you are suppose to use?

You might have damaged the CPU or the socket... hm did you see any bent pins?

it was a dell computer. i dont know what they used. there didnt appear to be any damage to the cpu. and the diagnostic lights on the back dont light up.

what series? i have done that before the heatsink was stuck to the processor from the thermal pad i had to pull on it pretty good and the lever was down but my processor came up with the heatsink than i had to twist it off, but i didint have the same problem as you i just put it back in and it worked no black screen and no problems.
