I've never understood how people can remember extremely complicated passwords, and to then remember which site uses which password. I can barely remember the username and password combination for sites now, with just three username variations and three password variations.

that's because you yutes never learned how to memorise stuff.

It's a basic eight letter string. After my Gmail account was temporarily compromised, I made three letters into capitals, and added a number on the end. If the site requires a symbol, a symbol at the end of the preceding string covers it.

I memorize license plates without trying to. I can recite facts from WWII, or really, any trivia, with ease.

But I can't remember phone numbers, credit card numbers, anything like that.

😕

Most forums were done on this basic string, then after the Gmail problem, the bigger ones got the updated one with caps and a number. The smaller forums, things like old niche gaming forums and private clan boards, didn't get changed. Any new accounts I make now use the caps/number, but not the symbol.

Largely, the password predates the era of mixed character passwords. When I made it, half the sites I was using actively refused mixed character passwords.
