It arrives tomorrow. Case and such arrives Wednesday. I hope the regular battery is sufficient, because I bought the standard case.

UMass is raising costs again. They've already jumped 3,000 in five years, and are looking to add another thousand next year.

For a third-rate education.

It's been a nickname for all four campuses for as long as I've known; derived from the party atmospheres of Amherst and Dartmouth, and the general incompetence of the management for the entire system, such as Whitey Bulger's cousin or something running the schools for years.

"would raise the combined tuition and fees for in-state students to an average of $11,900 per year."

Jesus Christ. This school is not worth that figure.

"University officials say they are looking for cuts to help plug a $54.5 million budget gap, but must contend with salary increases awarded to UMass unions and the loss of $37.8 million in federal stimulus money."

Brilliant! Figure the stimulus into an ongoing budget plan, provide huge salaries and benefits to incompetent and corrupt political buddies to run the school, and toss on unions.

And I saw a sign on campus recently, the union of adjunct faculty, seeking fair wages and working conditions. What absolute horseshit.

"The Patrick administration signed off on the pay increase as part of a three-year contract recommended to the Legislature, which gave UMass employees a 1 percent raise in the first year, and raises of 3 percent to 3.5 percent in the second and third years. Patrick and the Legislature funded the first year of the increase, as they have in past years, but have declined in their current budget proposals to fund the second year, which begins July 1."

So... Patrick and his cronies vote for the raises, but only fund the first round of it. Why is this not surprising? Yet he won again, because the R and the I (really, the I has always been and remains another D) split the field.

"University officials say they have tried to minimize cost increases in recent years by cutting spending. But the cuts mean students get less for their money — fewer professors, classrooms that are cleaned less often, older lab equipment. State financial support for UMass has dropped from $10,028 per student at its height in 2008 to $7,121 in the latest budget proposals for the year that begins July, according to UMass."

Well hell, the classrooms look disgusting, everything has been old for a long time, and half the professors aren't even real professors (they have tons of doctorate students teaching classes, which is a no-no).

IIRC, last year, Purdue cut retirement for their employees and there was a huge uproar. Purdue previously gave employees an amount equal to 15% of their salary for their 401K but had to cut it to 10% and people were bitching.

And of course, all the cost increases are in the fees section, not the tuition. So then the school brags that the tuition is only a couple grand a year, but the mandatory fees attached are ten grand a year.

Construction is ongoing for at least one new building, some innovation center I think, the usual bullcrap, yet the parking lot still is too small to accommodate all of the cars it needs to.

They are happy to issue parking tickets, but where does that money go? Not back into the parking lot. Perhaps those giant sports fields that go largely unused, since after all, our sports programs are complete wastes of money.

"“We provide substantial aid to families [earning as much] as $90,000, $100,000 a year in income,’’ he said. “When we don’t raise the price, we’re saving higher-income families money. We’re not saving lower income families money.’’"

Really, couldn't care less there guys. Do you know how many of your students are commuters who have real jobs already, and thus don't qualify as lower income? Here's a hint - A LOT.

Fools.

"“We’re talking about a top-flight university education for a fraction of what people are paying at private institutions,’’ he said."

No, no you're damn well not, and you goddamned well know it, UMass spokesman.
