OK, so let's drop the requirement for European maps. What model do you suggest?

Any of the following will fill lifetime maps, lifetime traffic, and spoken street names.

nüvi® 3790LMT
nüvi® 3760LMT
nüvi® 2460LMT
nüvi® 2360LMT
nüvi® 2350LMT
nüvi® 1490LMT
nüvi® 1450LMT
nüvi® 1350LMT

Price range is $400 down to $210, MSRP.

If it were me searching for one, I'd go to BestBuy or something to look at them. Although my price range would largely govern my choice.

Well, it is for my wife's bday so I wanted to keep it below $150. TomTom seems to have more choices in range.

So true.

For just about every car with a decent motor

Yep.

Really, single axle drive is becoming obsolete. AWD is inarguably superior for low traction conditions, and if you are looking for speed, FWD torque steers, RWD smokes the tires, AWD just goes.
