You wanna talk fucking context? Here is what your dear leader said -
"if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own"
"I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there"
"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help"

What's the message he's sending, Professor English? That if you were successful, it's not because you're smart or worked hard - he's attributing the success of people to someone other than them. That's exactly what the lazy deadbeats and bleeding heart liberals in the audience wanted to hear - it implies that it's not their fault for being a lazy deadbeat. Perfectly in line with the idiotic feel-good mantra your party preaches.

The only way Obama's message means what you say is in a world full of dichotomies. You do realize that you can be smart, hard working AND receive help or be lucky, right?

Here's a question for you: do you believe that someone born in Somalia, who is just as smart and hard working as someone born in the USA, will live the same standard of living when they grow up?

I find it funny to break down the argument people put forward against what Obama said. Most eventually resort to some kind of - fuck you Obama, I got what I got cause of me. Isn't this very unpatriotic? It feels like you're basically saying you're afforded no advantages being born into one of the few places in the world where there is almost no limit to opportunity, and where as a kid you're given tons of chances to succeed.

Hear, hear

I just quoted you saying I agreed that this thread is dead and you go and bring it back to life.....

lol Yeah, I saw that after I posted. 😛 He made a very good post though, and people refuse to let this stuff die in here so I just wanted to make sure that people understood that what he wrote is valuable.

Receiving help or being lucky does not invalidate the effort a hard-working smart person puts to build their success. I will grant you that some people become successful just by being at the right place at the right time. And others become successful by individual effort, risk-taking and sacrifice without help. However, Obama's speech repeatedly downplays the individual effort. Not once, not twice, but numerous times. You'd have to be willfully blindfolded to not see what he's getting at.

Chances are they won't. Do you think being born in USA, and sitting on welfare while watching celebrity drama is a sign of success compared to someone in Africa who may be a poor farmer but at least he makes his own living?

Blind patriotism is a glorified form of brainwashing and propaganda. There are advantages to living in the USA, but they didn't magically appear from the government fairy shitting candy from her ass. People paid for it. People created government. Ordinary people built the infrastructure which Obama is bragging about. And anyone living in the USA can take advantage of this infrastructure, but not everyone does what it takes to become successful.

You mean the speech that Romney basically also delivered (or copied) word for word in another speech he gave? Yeah, thought so....

Before you reply again, remember, you wanted this thread to die and one of the main people arguing the side you disagree with (Matt1970) has agreed. The only way this thread dies is if you, him, myself, and any other major contributors to this thread that has run its course, stops posting. You have to accept right now, and I will not post again in this thread myself, that you may not be able to get the last word in vs someone you disagree with.

Nah, no reason the thread should die just because a few contributors say it should when this thread offers such a wonderfully poignant opportunity to delineate exactly who the unserious, dishonest mental midgets are, running around claiming the same inane shit about Obama diminishing businesses and individual initiative. Despite him literally summarizing his words by saying people still succeed because of individual initiative, but also because we do things together (i.e. get help, something that government can partially offer). Serious people dismiss the contention that the message is anything but that, just as serious people dismissed the notion that Romney really likes firing people for the hell of it.

None of this is arguable or open for debate really, unless it strikes at the very core of someone's parisanship and/or ignorance of reality. To these people, anything they imagine is possible.

Come on . I can't believe you believe that which you put to key. American history shows it wasn't so much smarts or luck that made Rockfellers or Morgons or Warbrurgs ect ect ect . It was the most ruthless lying stealing murdering bastards that made the America we know. Great men do not have great wealth. They are only called great as other men want their piece of the pie. Modern day look at Bill Gates he stole from apple . But look at MS today and look at Apple . Who the great theif was JObs or Gates I don't know really don't care. I just want a bigger piece of the pie . LOL
