New notebook battery not charging

The notebook is a Compaq Evo N160

I have had this notebook for about a year now, have always used it with it plugged in. I bought a new battery for it and when I received it this week this is what happened.

1. I installed the new battery and booted up
2. Upon loading Windows it showed the new battery was at 60% and charging
3. 45 minutes or so later it was showing the new battery at 54% and charging
4. I left to go out for a few hours that evening, when I returned it was showing 0% (it wasn't showing that it was charging, just at 0%).
5. I turned off the notebook, and took the new battery out and then back into the notebook.
6. After booting up and loading Windows it showed 1% and charging
7. 5 minutes later it was back down to 0% (and didn't say charging)

Any thoughts on what's going on with it? Thinking bad connection on the motherboard? Could it be something else?

The PC is about 5 years old or so, the original battery is far past its prime - so no, it doesn't.

I thought it might be the new battery as well, but it holds a charge (it came to me at 60%), the notebook recognizes that the battery is present if I take it out and put it back in. But it just stops charging at 1% and won't go past that.

It's odd
