If so will I be able to use a terminal of those phones inorder to SSH into my home systems and do all kind of nice things that I can do from a remote machine ?

Of course I am saying all that since I have the t-zone subscription from T-mobile which already gives me internet access and what not on my current phone (Nokia 6800).

And thank you for your input.

Awesome, I'd love to have a terminal on my phone, but if you want to SSH into your PC from your mobile, couldn't you do that anyway? Your handset runs java, it has network access, java has network APIs, etc... never seen it though.

Maybe you'd be able to get a terminal.

I wouldn't be without some work though.

Also keep in mind that "Linux" is just a kernel. Linux isn't a operating system.. although many people mistake it for being one.

In a few years, I bet, every consumer electronic device that doesn't use Windows CE or whatnot will use Linux. Palm is moving to Linux. Nokia is definately using Linux.

But that doesn't mean that they will use a Linux distro. Palm is planning on porting it's UI to run on Linux, so that basicly your running palm OS with a different kernel. You'd normally not be able to install and run software on a Palm device unless you hack the snot out of it.

I think that most Nokia 'smart phones' are going to use Symbian OS. Probably your's does also. They may move to Linux in the future though. Seems to be the way things are going.

Nokia has a website for hacking around with their Linux stuff:
http://maemo.org/
It's based around Debian Linux, I beleive. The only device that I know that actually runs it right now is the Nokia Internet Tablet 770... which is suppose to be kinda cool with somethings (nice display, terrific browser), but sucks for others (limited memory, limited disk space, limited cpu)
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/nokia770.ars

Companies working on embedded linux and targetting the phone market include things like 'Trolltech' (QT makers of KDE fame), MontaVista (with their Mobilinux) and Wind River.

Then there are 'LiPs' which is a consortium for creating Linux standards for phones...

Thanks Drag for the post, but I am not sure if your post answers the question or not, what GSM phone that I am able to buy from here in the states, has almost a full blown terminal ? I see all those Linux based phones, but they really sound as they are just using the Linux kernel, it's not like they are using it becasue they want to make a handy Linux PC, why do I want a Phone with a terminal. well if that's possible then I can setup a machine at home with all files that I need, and maybe a couple of apps here and there and all I do is execute remotely, thus avoid the need to have things stored on my Phone, so let's say that I am in a PC lab at school and I listen to this internet audio stream and I decide I need to record it or something, I can make my home machine do such a thing by executing a record script from my phone you know.- So amongst those phones that are listed on Linux devices which ones do offer a fully functional terminal ?

None of them that I am aware of will probably have a terminal installed. It's kinda pointless for the sort of functionality and audiance they are targetting. They have very limited space and such to work with.

That's not to say that I know for sure, it's just that it's unlikely they have them pre-installed.

They would use Linux for the software libraries and the multitasking and memory management capabilities of the Linux kernel. Not so much to provide a Unix-like workstation.

That's not to say you can't have a terminal. There are several widely used embedded gui systems.. Qtopia is common, Kdrive-based X servers is another. For stuff like little Linux-based media players and handhelds it's common for people to figure out to install their own software on them. X terms are very commonly installed. It all depends on the specific devices and how they have it all setup. I don't know much about it otherwise. There are community pages and hobbiest stuff for most common things...

OK I see your point, it's just that it would be really nice If I would ba able to have a terminal handy, the extra functionality that it would bring to the phone is huge don't you think ?

Not for most people.

For you, for me, sure. I am comfortable with a command line enviroment and use command line tools and such everyday.

With Linux and such older computers are still quite usefull even if they can't handle a full blown Gnome or KDE enviroment... But could you imagine having a 400mhz PC with a 128 megs of RAM with Wifi, a multi-gig drive, and the ability to use Cell phone networks you can just carry around in your front shirt pocket?

I think that would be very fun thing to have.

(I'd have to carry around one of those foldable keyboards though...)

In a sense that's what I was hinting at, it's the lovely fact that you have a mini PC with you all the time plus add to that you can use GSM netwroks for internet communication, it's just amazing what I could do with that, I can think of at least a dozen of tasks that I do everyday that would be accomplished through that.

I'm going to get one and host a website on it. I wonder if it will have enough storage for Apache, PHP, AND Joomla?

Only if you get the upgrade.

BTW most Motorola feature phones and such should be running Linux before to long.

Wow don't push it, for me the goodness is in executing processes on my home machine , deleting / copying / editng/ files, stop / initiate execution of certain scripts that I made, running apps that are stored on my home machines remotely, that way I don't need ot have them installed on my phone (becasue most probably I won't have the capacity for all of them), another beautiful thing (but this one is a little bit hard to pull) stream music form my collection (about 4 GB worth of MP3's ) through my phone , for personal purposes a fully functional terminal would kick a$$ , of course you have to be very good on the technical side to make your way around , in that limited enviroment of propietery hardware and software, but doesn't sound like anything impossible.
