Not sure if this has gotten any national attention or not but the people that run Marquette University were obviosuly on crack yesterday when they announced the new mascot name.

Quick History:

Marquette was always the Marquette Warriors. Then people whined that it was somehow offensive to American Indians. SO they changed it to the Marquette GOlden Eagles about 10 years ago. Ever since Alumni has complained and there has been a battle going on to change it back. Then this week they announced they'd let everyone know which they decide to keep, Warriors, or Golden Eagles. But instead, they just changed it to the Marquette Gold.

Look at the poll on the website... 93% Don't like it, 7% do. Obviosuly someone's getting fired for this one. Or at least their budget is going to be hurting when all the alumni pull their donations...

Wild said the vote in favor of Gold was unanimous. The Gold will become official in July.

"I'm very pleased that we've chosen this direction for Marquette athletics," Wild said. "With Marquette Gold, the board has captured, I truly believe, decades of tradition in one profound term that symbolizes the high standards always met by our student athletes and our coaches."
With the Gold, the school is gambling that the new nickname will be embraced by students and alumni. The timing is also important; Wild said the board knew it had to act because the school will be joining the Big East Conference beginning in July.

That's stupid. Entirely ridiculous.

"Warrior" does not imply Native American, it just means someone who is engaged in battle. Hopefully they change it back. What is their mascot going to be now? A bar of gold?

Well, the logo did show an american Indian Warrior with full headgear and such but it wasn't done in a discriminating way... I'll see if I can find a link.

I think this is the old logo:

Doesn't seem offensive to me either. It's just how America has become a nation full of wusses because of all the stupid people suing everybody else for no reason. *sigh*

So then change the image of the mascot, not the name.

And it's not even offensive in the first place... oooh portraying the Native Americans as being excellent warriors! That's so demeaning!!!!!!! I can guarantee you out of all the people who complained maybe one or two had any native heritage.

At least it wasn't "SS Minnow".

I couldn't help but laugh when I read that.

Didn't Stanford also change their team name to a color?

That's ok - at my college, they changed our mascot from a guy in a futuristic space suit (awesome) to a giant inflatable rocket that was shaped like a penis. EVERYONE hated it, so much so that they unretired the Rocket-Man costume and they both are at games now. The giant inflatable dong avoids the student section though, because he's tall enough that they could reach from the stands and punch it.
