New news about the plane crash... Missile hit...

"CBS News is reporting that US government sources believe the Russian plane was downed by a surface-to-air missile fired from the Crimea Peninsula by terrorists..."

Does this sound like the use of a Stinger missile, or something else? We do know Bin Laden has access to about 100 Stinger missiles...

This being said, I didn't think Stingers could hit aircraft at 36,000 feet...

This is awful. HOWEVER the russians have not been giving as much support as I had hoped. They are helping, but not as much as they could. This will solidify their commitment to aiding the rest of the world in reaming these terrorists. I suppose thats the plus. Of course I wish this had not of happened in the first place.

10:55AM Plane Crash : -- Update -- NBC now reporting that Russian plane might have been accidentally shot down by Ukrainian military. The only thing that is clear in this story is that the standards for journalism have taken a turn for the worse since Sep 11.

Yep. They had full size news stories on the indian hijacking yesterday, all made up from a single false alarm.

Perhaps that is why it was targeted...

I just cannot imagine how this could have been an accident... But I guess anything is possible. The fact that other airliners were close enough to see it explode, I would think they would see the white exust contrial from a missile...

If it was a terrorist attack and most of the passengers were Israeli, then Isreal might choose to get involved in this mess...

Yep, they have about 350 warheads total according to "sources". 🙂

The last time I looked this info up in Jane's they had about 75 - US Built B61 tatical nuclear devices, all deliverable by the IDF's F-15 fighters...

That being said, I doubt their responce would be nukes...

Hmm...

That whole situation is just a mess... Israel is being cool about it right now, but at some point, Arafat HAS to crack down on the terrorists in his government. If he doesn't, he is just as guilty, even if he isn't doing the attacks or planning them...

Actually, there are many SAM's that only boost initially and then "glide in" to the target without the rocket motor running. This is typical in AAM's too.

You can answer your own question here. Look at a map that shows the plane crash site. Then look at where the Crimea penisula is. Do you really think a stinger missle can travel that far? Unlikely.

It was just an idea...

I think the range is about 1.5 miles and 10,000 feet... It is a very short range missile really meant for shooting down helocopters...

I was just thinking out loud. 🙂

well, a small land based missile could be launched from a boat pretty damn easily... hell you could probably launch a stinger from a rubber dingy if you didn't mind the melted rubber smell afterward (might be treading water too 😉 )!!
